Energex crews are continuing to restore electricity to about 1,500 homes after thunderstorms cut across south-east Queensland early this morning. The storms came in from south-west Queensland but there have been no reports of major damage. The storms had wind gusts of up to 80 kilometres an hour and dumped most of the rain north of Brisbane and on the bay.
Around 1,500 properties in the Caboolture and Redcliffe areas were
without electricity.
At 5pm AEST, 1,500 properties in the Caboolture and Redcliffe areas were without electricity. Energex spokeswoman Stephanie Pascoe says a number of tree branches fell on power lines. Crews are working as quickly and safely to get those up and restored, she said.
We've also got a small one on Russell Island and that's only a recent one - so once a storm has passed through tree branches, they can get quite heavy with the water and can actually fall on the power lines, so that's why there's sort of a delayed reaction to those. Forecaster Geoff Doueal says there has been little rain recorded in the dam catchment area.
The heaviest cells actually went over the northern suburbs and out towards Caboolture, he said. Just a little bit over the dams area they got between six or 13 millimetres that was the highest reading there. At the Dam wall itself Wivenhoe only had two millimetres, so around the Caboolture area they seemed to have got the most rain around the 24 millimetre range.

More storms are predicted to hit south-east Queensland later this afternoon. Thousands of properties were blacked out after an early morning thunderstorm ripped through state's south-east. More than 1,000 lightning strikes were recorded as the storms hit between 2:30am and 5am AEST.
Power has now been restored to the worst affected areas north of Brisbane, including Caboolture, Deception Bay and Burpengary. Energex spokesman Graham Metcalf says the heavy rain, strong winds and lightning brought down power lines.
Overall, we had about 10,000 homes and businesses that lost power during the night when the severe storm came through, he said. Forecaster Bryan Rolstone says more storms are on the way. Once again we can expect thunder activity, lightning later this afternoon - today is probably a little bit stronger than yesterday, he said.
Yesterday we had a severe thunderstorm warning in the St George area and into the western Darling Downs because of storm activity out there, but eventually those storms weakened down. Last night was mostly lightning fairly intense lightning and I think there was stronger wind gusts out toward Cape Moreton.
