A tectonic earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale rocked Bengkulu at 7:48 on Tuesday morning, local Meteorology and Geophysics Agency (BMG) said. It said the epicenter of the quake was located between 4.75 degrees southern latitude and 101.10 degrees eastern longitude at a depth of 35 kilometers and 167 kilometers northwest of Bengkulu city.
On September 12, 2007, Bengkulu was also hit by a 7.9 magnitude earthquake, killing 15 people and leaving more than 40 others wounded. Since then, up to 40 aftershocks measuring 4.5 to 6.9 on the Richter scale were reported by BMG with tremors felt in some areas. The earthquake also destroyed 27,834 houses and 19,506 houses in Bengkulu and West Sumatra respectively. About 28 per cent (7,905 houses) of the 27,834 houses in Bengkulu were considered severely damaged or totally collapsed
