Torrential rain has been causing problems on roads across Northern Ireland. Police have warned drivers in south Belfast that manhole covers have been lifted out of place and carried along by flood water. There are reports of flooding on the A4 Ballygawley Road and in the Cookstown area of County Tyrone. Sporting fixtures, including several Carnegie Irish Premier Division soccer matches, have also been hit. Organisers earlier had to cancel Saturday's Ulster Grand Prix at Dundrod.

Fire services were inundated with calls, as residents were evacuated from homes in Belfast, Co Down and Co Armagh. Rivers burst their banks, two bridges collapsed and 37 major roads were shut down throughout the day. Villages in Antrim and Londonderry were cut off, while some areas suffered landslides.
Makeshift shelters set up in town halls and churches were last night providing evacuated residents with hot food and blankets. Police said the flooding was among the worst seen in recent years. Last night, NI Water said it had received almost 3,000 calls for help. A spokesman said: "No system is equipped to deal with such intense rainfall," he said.
Forecasters said the rain would ease off tomorrow, though showers were expected. The floods came at the end of a week in which much of Britain experienced extreme weather. In Cornwall on Wednesday a five-year-old-girl died when she was swept away by a rain-swollen river. Abbie Pattinson fell into the Stratt, which was surging at 20mph.
Across the Channel, gale force winds and torrential downpours have also battered parts of Europe. The Met Office said the rain was caused by a low-pressure system and active fronts moving quickly northwards – unusual for August.

A clean-up operation has begun across Northern Ireland, after torrential rain caused widespread flooding. Rivers burst their banks, bridges were washed away and numeorus roads were impassable. Sixty-two millimetres of rain fell in just 12 hours on Saturday. Hundreds of homes were damaged and many people had to be rescued.
Teams from Northern Ireland Water, the Roads Service and the Rivers Agency worked through the night. The newly constructed Broadway Underpass in Belfast was at one stage under 20ft of water. A section of the central barrier had to be cut with angle-grinders to allow traffic to be turned away.
The fire service has said it is pumping 7,000 litres a minute from the underpass. It is believed there are cars stuck under the water after people fled their vehicle as the water level rose. The fire service's Kevin O'Neill said it is the most severe flooding he has ever dealt with.
We have had all our crews out since virtually two o'clock yesterday afternoon and all through the night dealing with incidents relating to flood water, he said. I don't think we've either seen a time when the flooding has been as devastating as this or has affected the road transport as badly.
In Newcastle, about 80 people had to seek shelter overnight in a centre on the County Down town's promenade.

Shelley Garrett, Ballymena: "In the end my neighbours decided to just wade through the water to get around."
Alexandra Woods, Banbridge: "A lot of the houses in Banbridge were flooded and rescue services came to drain some of the water off. I've lived here all my life and I've never seen it this bad."
Clifford McIlwain, Forestside, East Belfast: "I took this shot after picking my daughter up from work. The water was just gushing down from a carriageway above."
Derek Hall, Newtownabbey, County Antrim: "The water was pouring into the road and houses faster than we could pump it out. My church, the Whitehouse Presbyterian Church, was totally flooded."
