Mudslides and flash floods unleashed by days of heavy rain have left seven people dead and six missing in South Korea, officials said. Four people were killed in Chunyang village in the south-eastern county of Bongwha, where hundreds of others were forced to evacuate after flood waters and mudslides hit their homes, the National Emergency Management Agency said.
A 64-year-old woman and her 20-year-old daughter were killed when hillocks caved in on their house on Friday. Four others were swept away in a flash flood as they were climbing down a hill in the same village. Two were later confirmed dead while the other two were missing, it said.
Four people were also missing in Bonghwa county which received some 20 centimetres of rain on Friday alone, officials said. Rising waters have also left 220 people displaced, submerged more than 500 hectares of rice paddy fields and killed livestock. In the north-eastern county of Yanggu, two soldiers were killed in a mudslide on Thursday as they were working in a drain.
The seventh victim was a farmer who was also crushed when the side of a vegetable patch collapsed on him in the southern city of Jecheon.
