DAMASCUS, Ark. - Storms rolled across Arkansas, killing at least six people including a teenager crushed by a tree while she slept, officials said Friday, while the region remained on alert and a tornado was spotted touching down south of Little Rock just before 1 p.m. ET. Earlier, storms late Thursday and early Friday seriously damaged homes and businesses in the Kansas City, Mo., area, and tornadoes were also reported in Oklahoma and Texas, although there were no immediate reports of severe damage. In Siloam Springs, Ark., a 15-year-old girl was killed when a tree fell through her home. A 10-year-old boy survived the tragedy. Arkansas Department of Emergency Management spokesman Tommy Jackson also confirmed two deaths in Conway County and three deaths in Van Buren County, south of Bee Branch. The agency also reported 13 injuries. The storms damaged property and blew out electric service to nearly 6,000 homes and businesses.
Deaths, injuries 'could grow'
"We know there has been significant property damage so the number of deaths and injuries could grow," said Arkansas State Police spokesman Bill Sadler. State police and local emergency crews were searching for other injured people, Sadler said. At least six western Arkansas counties said heavy rain and frequent lightning caused damage as the storms, which stretched from Missouri to Texas, rampaged across the state. The storms formed when a mass of warm, moist air collided with a cold front near the state's western border. The National Weather Service issued tornado warnings for several counties in central and north Arkansas, while a spotter reported a tornado down just after 8:30 a.m. near Damascus. A msnbc.com reader, Brook Rhinehart, sent images said to be of Siloam Springs, adding that "we are looking at tons of clean up and trees uprooted and down everywhere."
80-mph winds in Kansas City
Authorities in Kansas City say the worst damage there was in the northern and eastern suburbs, where power was knocked out to 33,000 customers. Firefighters said several people were hurt and one home was blown off its foundation. An 18-wheeler was blown over on Interstate 29 in Riverside, near five empty train cars that were toppled. The National Weather Service said winds reached 80 miles per hour in the Kansas City area. The town of Ava reported several buildings were damaged or destroyed, including a school. Ozark schools were closed due to a power outage. Texas also saw at least one tornado Friday in the northeast part of the state. And several areas in Arkansas were reporting damage from twisters. At least two tornadoes and large hail was reported in Oklahoma late Thursday, though no injuries or significant damage was reported there. In Midwest City, Okla., resident Tina Sevy emailed msnbc.com with video of a storm that nearly formed into a tornado and pelted the area with hail up to 2 1/2 inches in diameter. Virginia earlier this week saw eight twisters tear through part of the state, injuring 200 people and leaving at least $22 million in damages.
