An earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter Scale has struck southern New Zealand on Sunday, officials said. New Zealand Government research body GNS Science said the undersea quake hit at 11:34am (local time) some 430 kilometres south-west of the southern city of Invercargill.
The quake was 10 metres deep, the US Geological Survey said. The tremblor was felt in Queenstown and was likely felt throughout the southern end of the South Island, the New Zealand Press Association reported. No tsunami warning was issued.
