While much of Canada is enjoying warm weather for the start of Spring, southern parts received a heavy dumping of snow over the past few days. Calgary in the province of Alberta broke a previous record held for 88 years as more than 15 cm (5.91 inches) of snow was dumped in the north east of the region. Along with the snow, high winds lashed the south of the country, leading to drifting snow and poor visibility on a number of roads.
The high latitude and low lying land in parts of Canada mean that winters are generally very cold. Cold air travelling from the Canadian Artic has little obstruction as it sweeps south in winter and spring creating a set of bitter conditions.
A spell of warm weather is expected to return over the weekend, which as sparked concerns over flooding. The recent heavy snowfall could cause problems when it starts to melt, resulting in the creation of a number of flood watches in the area.
