BRECKENRIDGE, Texas — Powerful storms including apparent tornadoes moved through parts of Texas and Oklahoma on Wednesday, destroying several homes, knocking out power for many, and causing several injuries and at least one death.
In Breckenridge, 125 miles west of Dallas, at least five homes were destroyed and there were reports of minor injuries, police said.
Crews with Oncor Electric Delivery were arriving in Breckenridge to survey the extent of the damage. Several poles were down and most of the city appeared to be without power, said Oncor spokesman Neal Blanton.Robbie Dewberry, an administrator at Stephens Memorial Hospital, said the hospital treated three people for storm-related injuries. He said the hospital was on emergency backup power.
Dallas-Fort Worth television KTVT showed footage of damage at the small airport in the town. A twin-engine plane sat amid the crumpled sheet metal that had been a hangar.
Several outbuildings were also damaged, but officials could not immediately confirm that the damage was caused by a tornado, said Jessica Schultz of the National Weather Service in Fort Worth.
Earlier Wednesday, storm chasers reported that a tornado briefly skipped twice on Interstate 20 west of Abilene, said Mary Keiser of the NWS in San Angelo.
The accompanying thunderstorm sent hail — some chunks up to the size of a baseball — pounding down in several counties around the Abilene area, Keiser said.
Officials in Palo Pinto County said roofs had been blown off a few homes and trees were down in Oran, about 80 miles west of Dallas. The storm moved north of the Dallas-Fort Worth area Wednesday night.
In Oklahoma, National Weather Service meteorologist Andrew Taylor in Norman said there had been two reports of a tornado in Choctaw County in the southeastern part of the state, although no damage was reported. Taylor said the reports could have been tied to the same tornado.
A woman was killed when her vehicle skidded off a highway and struck a pole and tree in Caddo County during heavy rain, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol said.
Flooding caused the Oklahoma Department of Transportation to close five highways in the state, and the National Weather Service issued flood warnings for several eastern Oklahoma waterways.
Meanwhile, a small tornado caused scattered damage in southwest Michigan, authorities said.
No injuries were reported but authorities say several horses were trapped inside a barn that was damaged by the stormy weather early Wednesday.
The National Weather Service said one of its investigators went to the area and determined that the damage was caused by a small twister.
Consumers Energy said more than 6,500 customers lost power, primarily in Kent and Muskegon counties. The company expected to fully restore service by the end of the day.
The weather service also warned of strong thunderstorms Wednesday in parts of Oklahoma.

Jeremy Dickey of Breckenridge, Texas, tries to turn off the water to his house after it was struck by an apparent tornado Wednesday evening, April 9, 2008. Dickey wasn't home at the time, but his wife, Tina, and two children, ages 4 years and 8 months, hid in an interior closet he had reinforced as a shelter. They were not injured, but the house was moved 10 feet off of its foundation. Breckenridge police said they have reports of a few minor injuries, but didn't have a full count. Power lines were down and at least five homes were destroyed, police said.

The National Weather Service says a small tornado hit parts of Allegan and Barry counties overnight. The storm left a mile-wide path of damage in Allegan County's Gunplain Township, uprooting trees and tearing into a barn. There was no tornado warning before the storm hit.
Crews have been out all day assessing damage and cleaning up. From the looks of it, that cleanup will take some time. Sheet metal ripped right off the roof, pieces of it are still stuck in trees, and a 2-ton tractor flipped over like a child's toy. There's no question this was one powerful storm.
"That tells us it was pretty good wind - about 80-90 mph, when you snap a tree off like that," says Daniel Cobb, a National Weather Service meteorologist. He spent the day reading the damage in the heaviest hit area. He says, from the way the storm hit, it tells him it was a low-grade tornado that touched down over an area about a mile wide.
"The fortunate thing is," says Cobb, "we're in a sparsely populated area. If this was a more densely populated area there could have been injuries."
Shelia Saunders and her family rushed to safety after the tornado shook their house and ripped through their property. Saunders and her neighbors were pretty shaken up, but after seeing the destruction this storm was capable of, they're feeling lucky everyone made it through okay.

After Weeks of Flooding and 10 Tornadoes, Another Band of Storms Targets Arkansas
Another round of storms moved across Arkansas on Thursday, bringing heavy rain, hail and high winds to a state already contending with three weeks of flooding and 10 tornadoes from a week ago. The Searcy County Sheriff's Department said some residents in the small north Arkansas town of Leslie were evacuated because of flooding and the threat of mudslides. Workers were sandbagging in places to keep flood waters at bay. U.S. Highway 65 was covered with water in places. Travelers were asked to stay off the roads. "It's just getting worse," sheriff's dispatcher Nola Massey said. "We're just trying to get everybody to stay home and not get out in it." Schools in Norfork closed at 9:15 a.m. because of flooding. Marshall schools were closed because of high water, and the Buffalo National River in north Arkansas was closed to recreational users. About 1,000 customers of Entergy Arkansas lost power as tornado sirens blared in parts of central Arkansas, including Little Rock.

A line of severe thunderstorms, tornadoes and even snow pounded the nation's heartland on Thursday, flooding nearly 200 roads in Missouri, closing schools in Arkansas and ripping the roofs of dozens of houses in Texas. The band of storms stretched from Colorado and Nebraska, which was expected to get up to 10 inches of snow, to Texas, where high winds and driving rain at one point quarter of a million people were left without power.
In Missouri, 3-4 inches of rain fell in just a few hours, unleashing flash floods that swamped parts of 180 roads across the state. Rescuers using ropes and life jackets pulled nine people from the offices of the Monett Times newspaper after the Kelly Creek burst its banks and surrounded the building. Police said the creek also threatened other businesses in downtown Monett and forced the evacuation of a nearby trailer park with about 10 to 12 homes.
Times publisher Lisa Craft said the afternoon newspaper's presses were high enough not to be threatened. But she said it was unclear when staff could get back in the building.

In Colorado daarentegen vielen pakken sneeuw. Weerkundigen voorspellen ook voor het weekend stormachtig lenteweer.
