Live Bliksemontladingen

North battered by gales and snow

High winds and snow have brought chaos to the North East and Cumbria, with roads closed and buildings damaged. The A66 transpennine route is closed at Bowes in County Durham because of snow and a number of stranded heavy goods vehicles on the Cumbrian border. The Coastguard warned people to stay clear of Redcar promenade, when parked cars were swamped by wind-swept waves. In Whitley Bay, North Tyneside, a cordon was set up after scaffolding collapsed near a hotel.

High winds sent waves crashing over sea walls at Tynemouth

Crashing waves
There have so far been no reports of injuries, but forecasters are warning of significant falls of snow and continuing high winds over the next 24 hours. A spokesman for Durham Police said the A66 had become unpassable at Bowes. He added that snow had also fallen near Consett and warned motorists to take extra care.

Coastguard officials said some onlookers had strayed too close to crashing waves at Redcar and urged people to stay away from seafront areas. On Tyneside, both Tynemouth and Whitley Bay suffered when winds gusting up to 50mph sent waves crashing over sea walls.

A cordon was set up near the Rex Hotel in Whitley Bay, when scaffolding collapsed, damaging some vehicles. Council engineers and contractors are assessing the situation. Some roads in Ulverston in the Lake District were closed on Saturday, when roof slates were ripped from roofs in high winds.

Wild weather for Easter weekend

Storms, gale force winds, sleet and snow are making for one of the dreariest Easter weekends in years - and show no sign of easing. "There is no sign of spring out there, to be honest," said Met Office forecaster Chris Almond. Snow has already slowed roads in northern England, and high winds are bringing snowy showers down the entire eastern side of the country. It could snow as far south as London overnight on Saturday. "It won't be a huge amount of snow in London, but there will be a few centimetres," Mr Almond said.

More to come
On Saturday a multi-vehicle crash on the M6 between junctions 16 and 17 near Sandbach in Cheshire closed the motorway in both directions. Police said there had been multiple severe casualties but that northbound carriageway had reopened to traffic. Motorists were warned of severe delays while the accident is investigated. Mr Almond said the mixture of rain and wet snow would continue. He added that while it may feel unseasonably cold, statistics showed Britain had a greater chance of seeing snow at Easter than it did at Christmas. In the north of England, the snow and high winds brought chaos to Cumbria, with roads closed and buildings damaged. The A66 route across the Pennines is closed at Bowes in County Durham because of snow and a number of stranded heavy goods vehicles on the Cumbrian border. A spokesman for Durham Police said the A66 had become impassable at Bowes. He added that snow had also fallen near Consett, and warned motorists to take extra care. Some roads in Ulverston in the Lake District have also been closed, after roof slates were ripped from roofs in high winds.

Crashing waves
In north-east England, the Coastguard warned people to stay clear of Redcar promenade after parked cars were swamped by wind-swept waves. Coastguard officials said some onlookers had strayed too close to crashing waves at Redcar and urged people to stay away from seafront areas. There have so far been no reports of injuries.

Rail delays
The bad weather for motorists comes just as a spate of railway engineering projects have severely limited the rail network across the UK. The works mean some of the busiest routes in the country will be reduced to just one train an hour, causing many people to opt to drive over the Easter holiday. The AA said 6.5 million cars were expected on the roads over the weekend. Eurostar said it expected to carry a record 160,000 rail travellers through the Channel Tunnel over Easter. On the London Tube, the Circle, District, Hammersmith and City, Jubilee and Metropolitan lines are affected by engineering works.

Boats grounded after strong winds

The RNLB Sir Ronald Pechell was holed after hitting the shore

A lifeboat has been holed and stranded on rocks off Torness in East Lothian and a fishing boat was also driven ashore on the Isle of Lewis. The Dunbar lifeboat Sir Ronald Pechell broke free from its moorings overnight. Plans are under way to recover the vessel which will have to undergo repairs. Meanwhile, the Ullapool registered creeler Our Hazel had to be towed free after she broke her anchor chains and grounded on the shore near Stornoway. A Stornoway Coastguard spokesman said the incident happened at about 2250 GMT on Friday. All six crew remained on board the Our Hazel and the vessel returned safely to port in Stornoway after being towed free from the shore.

An RNLI spokesman said the Sir Ronald Pechell broke its mooring during a "ferocious storm" and was swept onto rocks, sustaining very serious damage. No-one was on board at the time. The spokesman added: "In the prevailing sea conditions it was judged too dangerous to attempt to board the lifeboat during the night and an inspection to assess the damage is taking place." The volunteer crew and station helpers have been working to recover the lifeboat and urgent steps are being taken to remove its fuel to minimise the possibility of environmental damage.

Weather warning as snow sweeps in

The Met Office has issued severe weather warnings as bitter winds and snow showers sweep across England. Heavy snow has hit Scotland, much of northern and eastern England and parts of the Midlands and south-east England. Snow falling in the Scottish Highlands overnight spread into northern England by the early hours of Sunday morning.

Travel disruption is expected with icy roads and up to 10cm (3.9in) of snow. By 0830 GMT snow was already falling across south-east England.

The Met Office has published a weather warning map on its website

'Very icy'
The BBC Weather Centre said there would be an extremely wintry start to Easter morning for much of the country with "very treacherous" conditions on the roads. Lincolnshire Police have advised motorists to stay at home unless their journeys are completely necessary.

Forecasters were expecting up to four inches in upland areas

As the wintry weather moves across the south-east it will be well into the afternoon before snow clears from Essex and Kent, the BBC said.

Snow showers
The west of England will largely escape the snow, but will experience wintry showers of rain with sunny spells. Temperatures in these areas will hover around 6C or 7C. In Wales snow is only likely on the hills, with damp weather in lower-lying areas such as Cardiff and Swansea.

No snow is expected in Northern Ireland, which has had a bright start and where more bright sunshine is predicted for the afternoon. But it will remain cold with temperatures not much higher than 8C. Snow will continue to fall in the highlands of Scotland throughout the morning and afternoon, but the showers will be interspersed with sunny spells. The temperature there will remain at about 6C.

Readers' pictures of Easter snow

Snow covered the mountains behind the island of Lismore near Oban on the west coast of Scotland, as photographed by Telegraph reader Rosie Wainman.

Michael Stone captured his son Henry, 16, skiing down a slope by the River Cam in the village of Horningsea, Cambridgeshire.

In Peterborough, William Hustwayte woke up on Easter Sunday to find his backyard (right) blanketed in snow.

Likewise John Charlesworth was amazed at the scene in Sleaford, Lincolnshire.

However, Somerset (left) received only a light smattering of snow, as photographed by Geoff Williams.

In the Yorkshire Dales, Robert Mawer came across this frozen waterfall (right) on the summit of Ingleborough, one of three peaks in the area. The wind had blown the water up into the air where it froze, forming coral-like ice structures.
