Adelaide goes for national heatwave record

Australia's heatwave record will be broken today if the temperature in Adelaide gets above 35 degrees Celsius. Yesterday was Adelaide's 10th day in the high 30s - equalling the record for a capital city, set in Perth in 1988.

The weather bureau's Allan Beattie says the 10-day record will not be hard to beat today.

"We only have to get over 35 [degrees] and we're forecasting a maximum of 40 so I think the chances are quite high that we will break that record and have the longest heatwave on record in Australia or at least of the capital cities of Australia," he said.

Firefighters hurt as record spell fans flames

ONE home was destroyed and nine firefighters were injured as Adelaide's record-breaking heatwave unleashed a bushfire emergency, threatening dozens of properties last night.s temperatures soared into the high 30s for the 11th consecutive day in Adelaide - an unwelcome record for an Australian capital city - hot northerly winds fanned a blaze at Willunga, south of the city. At one point, a Country Fire Service team was cut off by flames and put in peril. The five-strong crew sheltered in the cab of their truck as the firefront engulfed it. All emerged from the "flash-over", some with burns, others suffering from smoke inhalation. Another four firefighters were injured in separate incidents, among them a middle-aged woman. Two were taken to hospital.

More than 160 firefighters, backed by water bomber aircraft and an aircrane, continued to battle last night to save homes threatened by the blaze. One house burned to the ground within minutes at Kuitpo, and dozens more were in jeopardy, the CFS said.

More than 100ha were destroyed, and emergency services warned residents to either evacuate or be prepared to help firefighters defend their homes. Conditions are expected to be more dangerous today, with temperatures again approaching 40C across most of South Australia, and winds gusting to 50km/h. The main power utility for Adelaide, ETSA, said it could not guarantee electricity supplies after consumption set a record yesterday. The mercury in the city hit 39.7C at 3.18pm, meaning Adelaide had been hotter for longer than any other Australian capital on record. With its 11th successive day of 35C-plus temperatures, Adelaide achieved the dubious distinction of topping a record set by Perth in 1988.

Last night, the South Australian Environment Department took the rare step of closing every National Park and reserve in the Mount Lofty Ranges and on the Fleurieu Peninsula for 24 hours. Health authorities reported about 15 to 20 mostly elderly people were going to public hospitals every day of the heatwave, complaining of heat-related problems, most often dehydration.

Bushfire alert as heatwave hits

FIREFIGHTERS throughout Victoria are bracing themselves for a danger period during the next week as temperatures nudge 40C.

The state has managed to go through the summer without a big fire, but the soaring temperatures have put firefighters on high alert.

A total fire ban has been declared across Victoria today.

Country Fire Authority spokesman Anthony Spargo said the fire risk was accentuated with people taking advantage of the holidays during the Easter period, and called on holidaymakers to be vigilant because human error could trigger a serious blaze.

"We need the help of the community to ensure they do the right thing," Mr Spargo said.

"Over the next few days we are expecting high fire danger risk periods with the lack of moisture in the grass, the dry conditions and winds coming through this evening and tomorrow.

"If a fire does start, it's going to be tough to control it."

He said firefighters had a taste of what might be in store as they battled a blaze at a timber yard in Ballarat overnight and a 30ha fire at Killarney, near Port Fairy in the state's west, where 15 tankers were called out.

"We're on high alert and we have all our resources in place," Mr Spargo said.

CFS monitors bushfires near Adelaide

Firefighters are expected to remain at the scene of a bushfire at Willunga Hill, south of Adelaide, with temperatures again forecast to reach the high 30s. The fire has been contained within a 10-kilometre perimeter that borders Meadows, Taylors Hill and Bishops Road.

Overnight, crews used thermal imaging equipment to find and douse hotspots. Another fire at Williamstown has also been contained, but could flare again if weather conditions deteriorate. Country Fire Service (CFS) incident controller Mark Thomason says it is important local residents remain alert.

A house burns during a bushfire near Willunga Hill, south of Adelaide, on March 13, 2008.

But he says the notherly winds could give firefighters some challenges. "Things might go to plan and the CFS stop any escapes, but it's really in the hands of the weather and the wind change and the predicted gusts," he said. If there is an escape we have a different situation.

There will be some areas that we will have difficulty accessing, and this about making sure the community is aware of what's likely to occur and they need to undertake some actions. Total fire bans have been declared across the state for the second day in a row.Police are also continuing to investigate whether the Willunga fire was deliberately lit.

No relief in Adelaide as heatwave continues

Adelaide continues to swelter, recording its 14th day straight above 35 degrees. The heatwave has already smashed the previous capital city record of 10 days straight above 35, set by Perth in February 1988.

The mercury has hit 39 degrees today already and could reach 40. The weather bureau is predicting another day of 39 degree heat tomorrow. The heatwave is not expected to ease until Tuesday, when a maximum of 30 degrees is expected.

Einde hittegolf Adelaide in zicht

Cool relief finally nearing Adelaide

Some relief is in sight as Adelaide today reached its 15th consecutive day above 35 degrees Celsius. The mercury soared to 40.5 degrees in the middle of the afternoon. Adelaide now holds a capital city heatwave record in Australia, having clearly passed the 10 consecutive days of extreme heat in Perth in February 1988.

Adelaide will finally start cooling after 15 days of extreme heat, but there is still plenty of beach weather forecast for the coming Easter long weekend.

Mike Bassanelli, from the weather bureau in Adelaide, says the sweltering heat across South Australia will now start easing. The cool air has already begun to cross the Nullarbor coast and even almost at Port Lincoln, so yeah we will see a shallow change come through, he said.

We should drop that temperature by a bit over 10 degrees. A maximum of 29 degrees is forecast for Adelaide tomorrow, and a cooler change on Wednesday night.

Adelaide heatwave 'one in 3,000 yrs'

A climate model indicates that a 15-day heatwave in Adelaide, like one that has just ended, is only likely to happen once in 3,000 years. The heatwave occurrence model has been created by atmospheric scientist Dr Warwick Grace. To check its reliability, Dr Grace matched the model's projections with Adelaide weather records. He hopes the model will help scientists predict the likelihood and duration of extreme heat. "We will incorporate projections that have been provided in a more general sense from the Bureau of Meteorology and CSIRO and so then we will be able to say 'Well the expectation of heatwaves at certain length and intensity may or may not change'," he said. Adelaide had 15 days of temperatures above 35 degrees Celsius, including 40.5 yesterday, setting a capital city record in Australia. Today has been more than 10 degrees cooler.

'Evidence of climate change'
The Federal Government has used Adelaide's record heatwave to attack the coalition's credentials on the issue of climate change. Agriculture Minister Tony Burke has told Federal Parliament the 15 consecutive days above 35 degrees are evidence of the warming trend. He has accused the coalition of being slow to acknowledge the impact of climate change. "You talk to anyone in South Australia at the moment working the land - they are living climate change," he said. "The heatwave that has just been endured has been described today by one scientist as a one-in-3,000-year event and the Member for Kalgoorlie [Barry Haase] says, 'Oh it's just the weather'."

Adelaide's heatwave to dry up today

Cooling off... forecasters say Adelaide's record heatwave will end today.

Weather forecasters say Adelaide's record-breaking heatwave will end today with the mercury expected to stay below 30 degrees Celsius for only the second time this month. Yesterday's maximum of 40.5 degrees was the 15th day in a row the mercury has soared over 35 in Adelaide. The weather bureau says the city is likely to record its highest ever average maximum temperature for March, which is usually 27 degrees. Senior forecaster Matt Collopy says the previous record was 31.3 in 1940. "Currently we're sitting around six or seven degrees above that mark and even if you put in moderate temperatures for the rest of March, we're still going to beat that 31.3 degrees quite easily," he said. "So I would imagine this record would hold for quite some time and hopefully, certainly for Adelaide, that's the case." More than 100 people have been treated in hospital for heat-related illnesses during the heatwave.

No widespread blackouts
The head of ETSA Utilities says the electricity grid has held up despite the record temperatures. General manager Sue Filby says there have been no widespread outages during the heatwave. She says a $150 million network upgrade and some cool nights have made the system more reliable. "It's nice when the cooler nights come, particularly if there's a bit of breeze to give the network a chance just to cool down and settle down for the next day," she said. "If we get a continuous string of hot nights and people put their airconditioners say on all night, that can put added stress on the network. "We have gone through a period where we've been in really unknown territory for a few days because the state's never been faced with this situation nor has Australia as a whole, so we've actually had the infrastructure and our network under very stern tests indeed."

Water sales up
The Spring Water Association says the heatwave is likely to have increased sales of water by about half. The president, Ian Bailey, says it is not simply because people have been thirstier. "Also because the quality of the water in various areas, particularly down around the lakes et cetera," he said. "There's a lot of salt coming down into the river and that sort of thing, so the quality of the water is not improving either and so people are looking for an alternative."

Drought funds flagged for heatwave losses

Federal Agriculture Minister Tony Burke says the farmers hardest hit by South Australia's extreme hot weather this month should be eligible for drought relief funding.

South Australia's March heatwave has hit fruit, vegetable and winegrape crops, prompting the Federal Agriculture Minister to suggest that farmers seek drought relief funding.

Mr Burke has told Federal Parliament there have been substantial losses in fruit, vegetable and winegrape crops because of unseasonal temperatures. He is urging affected farmers to seek help.

Virtually every industry in agriculture is affected, he said. Because the areas affected have already been exceptional circumstances (EC) declared, declared for EC payments, farmers in the worst-affected regions are eligible for EC support.

March weather record unlikely for Adelaide

Adelaide is expected to fall short of a record for daytime temperatures in March, despite a 15-day heatwave at the start of the month. The record for average maximum temperatures in March is 31.3 degrees Celsius and was set in 1940. David House from the weather bureau says if today's temperature hits the expected 22 degrees, Adelaide will fall just short of that mark.

Despite a 15-day heatwave, Adelaide is unlikely to break the record for daytime temperatures in March.

By about 0.4 degrees. What we've had happen is, just like before where we had the constant conditions with the northerly winds keeping the heatwave there, now we've moved into a south-south westerly pattern and we haven't really seen the situation change much, he said.

We didn't have any rainfall in the first two weeks of March with the heatwave but in the last two weeks we've actually had 15 mm which has sort of put us up a little bit, but still 10 mm shy of the average March rainfall.
