The UK is braced for more storms overnight which will strike the country further north than on Monday. Forecasters are predicting gales of up to 80mph affecting Northern Ireland and the north of England and Wales, and possibly snow in northern England. They expect wind to disrupt rush-hour traffic on roads in the north of England such as the M6 and the A1. The clear-up has started after Monday's winds which affected transport and left about 30,000 homes without power.

BBC weather forecaster Chris Fawkes said: "The wind will start to pick up about midnight in Northern Ireland and then strong winds will spread to the rest of northern England and Wales, and will pick up elsewhere too. "There's also the potential for some snow in parts of northern England.
"In tomorrow's rush-hour we could have disruption to some of the northern roads like the M6 and the A1 with strong gusts of wind. "These winds have the potential to disrupt transport quite easily. We almost quite expect it." He said Monday's weather included a 95mph gust of wind at The Needles on the Isle of Wight.
The Environment Agency has three flood warnings and 39 flood watches in place. The flood warnings are for the Broad and Earnley Rifes at Selsey in West Sussex, Chichester Harbour east of Emsworth Channel, and Lands End to Hartland Point in Devon.

De golven op zee kunnen tot 9 meter hoog reiken. Spanje heeft al alarmcode rood afgekondigd. In Ierland, Groot-Brittannië, Noorwegen, Frankrijk, Duitsland en Portugal geldt code oranje.
Bilbao (Spanje) kreeg het vandaag al flink te verduren.
"Uiterst waakzaam"
Frankrijk krijgt deze middag windpieken van 133 km per uur over zich heen. Het gaat om Haute-Normandie, Picardië, Nord-Pas-de-Calais en de departementen van de Ardennen en de Marne. De WMO voorspelt voor de kusten van Portugal en het noorden van Spanje golven van 7 tot 9 meter. Op de Britse eilanden wordt de bevolking opgeroepen "uiterst waakzaam te zijn" voor de storm die deze avond verwacht wordt in het westen van Ierland en het noorden van Engeland.
Nog meer schade?
De storm van gisteren maakte alleszins al veel schade. In Groot-Brittannië werd de haven van Dover gesloten door de hevige regen hoge windsnelheden. In het zuidwesten van Engeland en het zuiden van Wales zaten duizenden bewoners zonder elektriciteit. In Frankrijk kostte de storm het leven aan een vrouw. Ze kwam om nadat ze geraakt werd door een tak die van een boom afbrak.

Parken en bossen in Brussels Gewest gesloten voor storm

De parken gaan pas opnieuw open na opruiming van eventuele schade. In de parken die niet kunnen worden afgesloten, zal aan de ingang een bericht hangen. Park- en boswachters zullen het publiek inlichten.
Leefmilieu Brussel-BIM raadt aan de omgeving van parken en bossen te vermijden en op een veilige afstand te blijven van bomen.

Storm richt zware schade aan in Henegouwen
In het Henegouwse Beaumont is de brandweer de voorbije nacht tientallen keren moeten uitrukken door het slechte weer. Er waren talloze oproepen voor ondergelopen kelders. Verscheidene straten waren onderbroken doordat beken overgelopen waren. De materiële schade is aanzienlijk.
In Sivry liep het gemeenteplein onder water. Dat is in een vallei gelegen. Ook de gemeente Erpion kreeg te kampen met overstromingen. In Leval-Chaudeville waren verschillende straten afgesneden voor het verkeer. De brandweermannen moesten de passagiers van drie wagens bevrijden. Op verschillende plaatsen moesten ze zandzakjes plaatsen.

Gales exceeding 80mph started at 4pm yesterday and were expected to combine with heavy snow to cause large-scale disruption to transport and power supplies. The Met office issued a severe weather warning from 9pm yesterday until 3pm today for Northern Ireland, southwest Scotland, the North of England, North Wales and the Midlands.
The storm could cause significantly more damage than Monday’s weather because it covers a larger area, a spokesman said. “Unlike yesterday’s storm, we’re expecting this one to affect most of the country,†he said.“Unfortunately high winds will combine with blizzards in northern England and southern Scotland. We expect it to cause disruption to transport and there may be damage to buildings and trees.â€
The Environment Agency issued 30 flood watches and seven flood warnings last night, focusing on the northwest of England along the Lancashire and Cumbria coastlines. A hospitality company at the Cheltenham Festival was forced to offer refunds to 2,400 people who had booked tickets for a 300-seat marquee that was destroyed on Monday morning.
Gale-force winds ripped down the restaurant marquee operated by Keith Prowse. The restaurant, which is out of commission for the entire four-day festival, offered champagne and a four-course lunch for between £369 and £569 a head. Festival organisers said racing had not been affected, but admitted that strong winds could lead to the cancellation of some races.
Weather conditions in the South West and Wales had “vastly improved†yesterday, the Environment Agency said. A flood watch was still in place for the coastline from Chichester Harbour to Selsey Bill and Broad and Earnley Rifes in Selsey.

Second storm batters northern UK

This time, the low pressure front could bring snow to higher ground in parts of northern England and southern Scotland. The Environment Agency has a severe flood warning in place for the Kingsway North area of Warrington along with 13 other flood warnings, mainly in north-west England.
Rush-hour storm
BBC weather forecasters say the storm will move into north-west England by the early morning rush-hour, gusting on coasts to as much as 85 mph, and 65-75 mph inland. The west coast, including Cumbria, Lancashire, north Wales, west Wales and possibly the Bristol Channel are most at risk.
It is the second band of stormy weather within a few days.
Later on Wednesday the storms will move across central northern England and East Anglia. Following Monday's storm, the Energy Networks Association, which represents UK energy suppliers, said about 2,400 homes in south-east England, 1,900 in eastern England and 3,000 in south-west England were still without power.

Door de windrichting is maar één baan beschikbaar voor zowel vertrekkende als binnenkomende vliegtuigen. Een blik op de website van Brussels Airport leert dat de vertrekkende vluchten in Zaventem woensdagochtend geen noemenswaardige problemen ondervinden.
Door de storm zijn tientallen vluchten geannuleerd op Schiphol en de vertraging van binnenkomende vluchten kan oplopen tot twee uur, meldde een woordvoerster van de luchthaven.
De vertraging kan in de loop van woensdagochtend verder toenemen. De luchthaven verwacht dat de "ernstige" reductie van de capaciteit zeker tot het begin van de middag zal duren. In de ochtendspits kunnen per uur nog maar twintig vliegtuigen binnenkomen. Normaal zijn dat er zestig per uur.
De afgelopen dagen speelde het probleem niet omdat de harde wind uit het zuiden kwam. Dan zijn er banen genoeg. Met de wind uit het westen kan alleen de Buitenveldertbaan worden gebruikt. In Zaventem zijn er geen grote problemen door het slechte weer.

In de Kempen is de stormschade voorlopig nog beperkt. In Arendonk moest een boom verwijderd worden en elders was er sprake van een omgewaaide muur en stukken loshangende gevel.

In 7 Europese landen is stormalarm afgekondigd. De reizigers die daar naartoe reizen , wordt aangeraden uiterst voorzichtig te zijn. Het gaat om Groot-Brittannië, Nederland, Duitsland, Frankrijk, Spanje en Tsjechië.
Vooral in Nederland en Duitsland is er kans op schade, de rukwinden kunnen er meer dan 120 km/u halen.

Network Rail has imposed a 50mph speed limit between Stevenage and Edinburgh due to the risk of track obstruction or power line failure. Mainline operator National Express said tickets bought for Wednesday would still be valid on Thursday. Passengers who choose to travel should expect severe delays.
'Precautionary limit'
A Network Rail spokeswoman said: "After liaising with the Met Office, we have decided to impose the speed limit due to the danger posed by the high winds. "There are no issues with the trains or with the rail infrastructure - the only problem is the weather. "At the moment, the restriction is a precaution as objects could easily be blown onto the track or affect power lines." The speed limit would be reviewed at about lunchtime on Wednesday, she added. Other train services, including the Sunderland to London link operated by Grand Central, are also affected. Passengers are being urged to check with National Rail Enquiries before travelling. Earlier this month, West Coast rail passengers were hit by delays after gale-force winds blew containers from two freight trains onto the tracks.

Warnings to avoid coast repeated
Coastguards have repeated their warning for people to keep a safe distance from if they plan to watch crashing waves on ahead of Wednesday's high tide. Gusts up to 66mph (106kph) were recorded in Holyhead harbour overnight as the second band of storms to hit the UK in three days pounded the region. No major incidents have been reported but winds are set to remain strong. Holyhead Coastguard station's power was cut briefly as the storm force winds struck. A generator restored power. Coastguard teams patrolled the town's promenade until 0230 GMT as a precaution until the high tide had passed. Holyhead Coastguard watch assistant Janice Burnell said winds overnight were recorded up to 61mph (98kph), with the stronger gusts in Holyhead's inner harbour. She repeated the warning the service has been given about the risk people face if they are at the shore line as storm force waves break. She said: "If people could stay away from wave-dodging, watching the waves coming over - it's quite dangerous.
Ferries
"It's not only water that comes over the walls, it's the stones and everything that comes with it. The sea doesn't take any prisoners." She said added the next high tide in the area was due at 1320 GMT. Meanwhile, Irish Ferries Pembroke to Rosslare service is cancelled until 2100 GMT. Stena Line cancelled its scheduled services overnight and there were some delays to flights at Cardiff International Airport and Anglesey.

Woensdag raast een storm met zware windstoten over België. Op zee is er storm met kracht van 9 tot 10 Beaufort. De Nederlandse luchthaven Schiphol had woensdagochtend te kampen met tal van vertragingen en annuleringen van vluchten. In Zaventem zijn er geen problemen.
Woensdagochtend waren er rukwinden aan de kust tot 100 km/u, zegt weerman Eddy De Mey. In het zuiden van Nederland halen de windstoten zelfs 105 km/u. Boven zee halen de rukwinden 120 km/u.
De westerstorm woedt ook over het vasteland, waar rukwinden tot 85 km/u worden vastgesteld. De storm houdt volgens De Mey aan tot woensdagmiddag. Tegen woensdagavond zal de wind langzaam in sterkte verminderen.
De komende dagen verwacht de weerman geen storm meer boven België. Zaterdag haalt het kwik zelfs 15 graden. Nadien wordt het opnieuw kouder. De Mey verwacht een koud paasweekend. In een aantal Europese landen is stormalarm afgekondigd. Reizigers die naar Groot-Brittannië, Nederland, Duitsland, Frankrijk, Spanje en Tsjechië reizen, wordt aangeraden uiterst voorzichtig te zijn. Vooral Nederland en Duitsland verwachten veel schade.

In Petit-Enghien (provincie Henegouwen) moest een gezin dinsdagnacht hun huis verlaten wegens instortingsgevaar. Het koppel en hun kinderen worden opgevangen door een familie in Brussel.
Door het hoge waterdebiet op de Maas verloor een Nederlandse binnenschipper woensdagochtend de controle over zijn vaartuig. Toen de schipper de sluis van Bouvignes (Dinant) richting Givet verliet, kwam het 80 meter lange schip dwars te liggen. Het schip blokkeert de scheepvaart.

Cheltenham falls victim to weather
The gale force winds sweeping Britain claimed a sporting casualty on Wednesday as horse racing at the prestigious Cheltenham Festival was canceled. More than 55,000 spectators were set to descend on the racecourse in the south-west of England, which suffered severe storm damage earlier in the week.
Cheltenham managing director Edward Gillespie said that they had abandoned Wednesday's racing amid renewed fears that high winds would render hospitality structures throughout the venue unsafe. "We had a forecast last night indicating that wind speeds would gust over 50mph (80kph), up to and including 3pm this afternoon.
The strong winds have caused damage to the hospitality areas at C'heltenham.
"We had a look this morning and that has sadly been reinforced. "That means many of the temporary facilities would not be safe at that level. "The reason we are not racing today is for the safety of the customer," Gillespie told Channel Four television.
The feature race on Wednesday was the two-mile (3.2km) Queen Mother Champion Chase, but organizers are hoping that the whole program can be incorporated into the card on Thursday and Friday, weather permitting. Friday will see the highlight of the world's leading steeplechasing event, the Gold Cup with Kauto Star defending the crown.
On the festival's opening day on Tuesday, 10-1 shot Katchit held off longtime leader Osana to win the Champion Hurdle.

Storms bring second day of travel woe
Flights, trains and ferries are once again facing disruption today because of high winds across Britain.
Flights
At Heathrow 22 flights have been cancelled this morning due to bad weather, with mostly short-haul and domestic flights affected. The disruption at airports across the south has been less extensive than Monday however, with Gatwick and Stansted airports so far reporting no flight cancellations. At Southampton one flight has been cancelled this morning between the south coast airport and Leeds. In the north of the country, airports have been worse affected. At Birmingham International Airport five flights have been cancelled and there have been a handful of delayed services, at Leeds Bradford airport five flights have also been cancelled and a similar number delayed, at Manchester there has been just one cancellation, while at Liverpool and East Midlands airports, flights are running smoothly so far. In Scotland there have been few flight disruptions - Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen airports have between them notched up seven flight cancellations today, although not all are weather-related.
Trains
National Rail is warning of weather-related disruptions across the UK rail network. The worst affected areas are north Wales, the Midlands and northern England. The site carries links to the websites of individual rail operators for more specific information on delays and cancellations.

The Port of Dover remains open but is warning ferry passengers that sea conditions in the Channel are rough, with winds of between Force 9 and storm Force 10.The Norfolkline to Dunkerque services are subject to delays, while the SpeedFerries fastcraft services from the Hoverport to Boulogne are also disrupted due to the weather. P&O Ferries is warning of severe delays on its service between Dover and Calais today due to strong winds. The ferry operator has warned passengers to expect delays of up to three hours and says it has pared down its service to a "shuttle type service" until the winds decrease. Additionally, SeaFrance is still experiencing disruption to all its services due to industrial action. Passengers are advised to call 0871 22 22 500 prior to travel. Due to heavy queueing of freight traffic entering the port on the M20, tourist traffic is being directed to the A2 and M2 or local roads to reach Dover. Further to that, the Highways Agency is warning of restrictions on the Londonbound carriageway of the A20 between the Eastern Docks roundabout and York Street roundabout.

Delays after Forth Bridge closed
Motorists are being urged to avoid the Forth Road Bridge after it was closed when a lorry overturned on its central reservation.
The truck was struck by a huge gust of wind measuring about 69mph as it was travelling north to Fife.
The bridge had been closed to double decker buses and had a 40mph speed restriction in place.
The accident happened at about 1110 GMT and officials said it would be 1400 GMT before the lorry was moved.
A Feta spokesman said: "We were not diverting vehicles because winds were not at levels where we normally do that.
"There was a freak gust of wind when the lorry was halfway across the bridge."
The lorry driver suffered slight injuries and was taken to Queen Margaret Hospital in Dunfermline.

Storm teistert Europa
Bij Manchester werd een weg helemaal vernield.
Na het natuurgeweld van gisteren raast een nieuwe storm over Europa. Vooral het Verenigd Koninkrijk is getroffen. De storm zorgt er voor rukwinden, plaatselijke overstromingen en verkeersproblemen in het noorden van Wales en het noordwesten van Engeland. Er werden windsnelheden tot 145 km/u geregistreerd in Noord-Wales, en volgens meteorologen moet het ergste nog komen.
Overstromingen
De storm gaat gepaard met hoogtij, waardoor het kolkende water over de havenmuren stroomde in een haven in Noord-Wales. Bij het natuurgeweld van gisteren kregen in het zuidwesten van Engeland ook veel kustdorpen te maken met wateroverlast.
In het Baskische San Sebastian liep de dijk ernstige schade op.
Rukwinden

"Most operators now expect to run a normal service although residual cancellations and delays can still be expected whilst the service returns to normal," it said on its website.
