Sydney and its surrounds have avoided any significant damage from a storm this evening, despite widespread reports of hail and local flooding. Forecaster Jake Phillips says some areas in the Sydney basin saw 70 millimetres of rain in one-and-half-hours, with particularly heavy falls south of the city.
Near Wollongong we had 44 millimetres in half an hour at Cringila, and that rainfall there actually corresponds to the type of intensity we might expect about once in 20 years at that location, he said. There were also reports of local flooding across the CBD and inner-west from Haymarket to Leichhardt.
The State Emergency Service says it has received about 80 calls for assistance, but there were few reports of major damage. But police say the M5 Motorway was closed to traffic after a man was injured when his car hit a pole during rain.

The State Emergency Service (SES) says it received about 100 calls last night after storms lashed the Illawarra region and parts of Sydney. High winds brought down trees and powerlines, while heavy rain caused flash flooding. Forecaster Jake Phillips says the intensity of rain in some parts was a rare occurrence.
"Just to the south of Sydney, near Wollongong, we had 44 millimetres in half an hour at Cringila," he said.
"That rainfall there actually corresponds to the type of intensity we might expect about once in 20 years at that location."
There were also reports of local flooding across the CBD and inner-west from Haymarket to Leichardt. There were no reports of major damage, but police say the M5 motorway was closed to traffic after a man was injured when his car hit a pole in the rain.
