Police have closed roads affected by floods
Flooding has closed one of England's key rail routes and caused major problems on motorways, with threats to homes across the country. The West Coast Mainline was closed in Lancashire between Lancaster and Preston disrupting services between London and Scotland. There were serious problems for drivers across England as traffic came to a standstill and roads were closed. Elsewhere alarms were sounded to warn residents of severe flood danger. At 1200 GMT on Monday, seven severe flood warnings and 83 flood warnings were in place across England and Wales.
Heavy snowfall also hit parts of north-east England
'Extreme danger'
Heavy snow was also affecting parts of north-east England.Several inches of snow fell in County Durham and Northumberland, and Durham County Council scrambled its entire fleet of gritters and snow ploughs in upland Weardale and Teesdale. In Lincolnshire, the Environment Agency sounded flood sirens in Louth and Horncastle on Monday to give people advance warning. Residents were told to protect their homes as water levels on the River Ludd continued to rise.
Drivers were also warned of standing water on roads in the Louth area.
In Yorkshire, the Environment Agency said there could be "extreme danger" to life and property in parts of Huddersfield, where the River Colne was expected to peak at 1330 GMT. Severe warnings were also in place in Wakefield and Skipton. Traffic almost came to a standstill on the M1 and the M62 as heavy rain continued to fall across the region. A woman and child were rescued by Humber Fire and Rescue Service crews after their car got stuck in flood water on the B1246 road between Pocklington and Warter. Network Rail said flooding had forced the closure of the railway line between Sheffield and Barnsley.
A spokeswoman said water levels had risen above the rails at Elsecar in South Yorkshire and all local services between the two destinations had been suspended. In Cumbria, motorists were being urged not to travel unless absolutely necessary and several roads were closed. In Gloucestershire, residents were being asked to remain vigilant to the risk of flooding. Surface water on roads caused some disruption in the county on Monday, with several A and B roads closed. Due to the closure of the West Coast Mainline, trains from Scotland were being terminated at Lancaster, while services from Birmingham and London were terminating at Preston. Coaches were being organised to take passengers between Preston and Lancaster, Network Rail said.

Twelve flood warnings remain across mid and north Wales after a weekend deluge. One flood victim, Richard Pugh, of Llanbadarn Fawr, near Aberystwyth, said: We got up this morning and we could see the water was high and beginning to come in the garage. So we cleared the garage floor and we just about saved everything that was on the floor.
It hasn't come in the house yet and hopefully they'll pump it away before it gets any worse. He said he had lost some property but managed to save most of it. Mr Pugh said flooding had been "pretty bad" 10 years ago, but the latest bout had seen water rise two inches higher and was the worst he had ever seen. Fire officer Wayne Thomas, who was in charge of the incident, said flooding had steadily got worse in Llanbadarn Fawr as the morning wore on.

The River Colne, which flows though the centre of Huddersfield, has two severe floods warnings in place.

She said there was "widespread frost overnight", adding: We have got quite a lot of ice around - untreated roads and pavements in particular. The forecaster went on: "That's especially a problem across northern England, southern Scotland, and parts of Wales.
"We've had a drier night and we should have a drier day."

Flooding chaos which forced the closure of key rail and road routes in northern England has eased, but with disruption continuing on many transport routes. Dozens of homes and businesses were flooded on Monday, with parts of Yorkshire, Shrewsbury and Worcester among the worst affected.
Water levels in many areas have begun to recede. The Environment Agency had two severe flood warnings and 65 flood warnings in place at 1215 GMT on Tuesday. Fears that water levels would reach the height of summer 2007 appeared to be receding, with colder weather forecast for the rest of the week. But in Wressle, near Howden in East Yorkshire, several passengers were trapped on a bus which was stuck in floodwaters.
Emergency crews launched a rescue by boat after the bus got stuck. Water levels across Yorkshire have been receding and the Environment Agency has downgraded its severe flood warnings. A spokesman said parts of the region had received about 50mm of rainfall in 24 hours.
He said: "This is less than in summer 2007, but the rivers are saturated after several weeks of wet weather."

Torrential rain and high winds have been battering Scotland, causing hazardous conditions for motorists. Police considered closing the M80 in central Scotland between junctions five and nine due to flooding. Some of the water was removed and the route remained open, but there was still "considerable" surface water.
Motorists are being urged to take extra care on the roads
Stornoway experienced the worst of the high winds through the night with gusts of 75mph, while in Shetland, gusts of 85mph were recorded on Friday morning. The high winds were expected to ease through the day. A burn burst its banks in Banknock, Falkirk, while rescue teams were alerted to flooding near Beauly and Fort Augustus in the Highlands.
Central Scotland Police said the A883 road to Denny was closed at the Bogton roundabout after a lorry became stuck under the over-bridge for the M876.The route has also been reduced to one lane heading towards Falkirk after the River Carron burst its banks.
Localised flooding has taken place in a number of areas
The A872 to Denny and the A9 Plean to Torwood stretch were only passable with care. There were a total of nine flood warnings in place, with the River Tay and the River Earn areas worst affected. The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (Sepa) also issued warnings for the River Tummel and River Lyon.
High winds were also causing traffic problems across Scotland. Traffic Scotland said the Forth Road Bridge was closed to high-sided vehicles and caravans, while the Tay Bridge was restricted to cars only.
