QUITO, Ecuador - Rumbling by Ecuador's Tungurahua volcano has forced the evacuation of at least 1,000 villagers, authorities said Sunday.
Ecuador's Tungurahua volcano, seen here Dec. 12, could become more active in coming days, experts said.
Some 300 families from 10 hamlets on the western slopes of the 16,400-foot volcano, 80 miles southeast of Quito, have been evacuated as a precautionary measure.
"The intense activity has forced us to put into effect a voluntary contingency and evacuation plan," Pablo Morillo, the head of emergency operations, told The Associated Press by telephone.

Ecuador's Tungurahua volcano is poised for a major eruption, a volcanologist said Wednesday. Authorities last week evacuated 10 villages from its western slopes as a precaution.
Patricia Mothes, a U.S. expert on volcanoes, said the 16,575-foot volcano, located 80 miles southeast of Quito, "is preparing to generate, in days or weeks, a great eruption."
The Tungurahua volcano, located about 80 miles southeast of Quito, Ecuador, erupts.
She said that could mean pyroclastic flows — blasts of volcanic material "that descend at high speeds and burn everything in their way."
Tungurahua, which has been active since 1999, has been freeing a high level of energy since Dec. 22, Mothes told The Associated Press by telephone.
"We have indications that there may be important volumes of magma which would be liberated in an eruption," she said.

Ecuador's Tungurahua volcano is spewing molten rock, gas and ash, increasing its activity and prompting authorities to evacuate hundreds of villagers living in the shadow of the mountain. Tungurahua, which means "Throat of Fire" in the native Quichua language, is a volcano 130 kilometres south of the capital, Quito. It last erupted in August 2006 and has been rumbling and belching up rock, gas and ash since January.
"It was a really big shake coming from the volcano and that forced the civil defense to evacuate the population," civil defense chief Roberto Rodriguez said.
The Tungurahua Volcano erupts, as seen from Banos, Ecuador, 135 kilometres south of Quito, on February 6, 2008. The volcano has increased its activity, prompting authorities to evacuate hundreds of villagers living in the shadow of the mountain.
He said there were no reports of injured or dead, but some local authorities said ash and rock fragments showered some communities located on the slopes of the volcano. Volcanologists expect stronger activity from Tungurahua because it is in the middle of an eruption cycle that began in 1999.
"This is an ongoing eruption and we still don't know the magnitude it could reach," said Hugo Yepes, the head of the country's Geophysics Institute.
Mr Yepes said he would not rule out molten rock and ash reaching the resort town of Banos, where 17,000 people were forced to evacuate in 1999 after loud explosions and big clouds of ash blew out of its crater. In 2006, streams of fast-moving molten rock and ash enveloped several hamlets tucked in the volcano's folds, killing four people, leaving two missing and forcing thousands to evacuate and lose their corn and potato crops.
Juan Salazar, the mayor of Penipe, a municipality near the volcano, said the Tungurahua sounded like an old airplane turbine. Poor farmers of nearby communities for months have defied the roaring volcano to tender their crops.
