LONDON Congestion apart, the biggest problem likely to confront the 18 million motorists expected to take to the roads today is fog.
Forecasters said that there was unlikely to be a repeat of last year’s severe conditions, which caused misery at the country’s airports, but that driving conditions would be dangerous in many parts of the country. The sub-zero temperatures expected from the Midlands northwards will add to the hazards, according to the Met Office.
There is at least one present for those travelling to be with family and friends: there will be only 66 miles of roadworks on the country’s main roads, with two thirds of major schemes due to be suspended from 6am today until January 1.
Four million people are expected to use the domestic rail network today. Travel organisations have said that tomorrow will be the busiest day at airports. Up to 3.5 million people are expected to take overseas flights during the festive season, and more than 200,000 will cross the Channel by ferry or train.
As usual, the prospect of a white Christmas is receding. Forecasters predict that temperatures on Christmas Eve could be as high as 10C

Thousands of miserable families have been told they will not be taking their planned Christmas holidays this year after more flight cancellations today followed hundreds of grounded planes yesterday.
Thick fog descended on much of England leaving hundreds of flights cancelled and around 1,000 people spending the night on the cold floors of Heathrow’s departure lounges. Another 64 flights in and out of Heathrow have been called off today with Gatwick cancelling five flights, Edinburgh four and Glasgow one. The fog has now cleared but scores of flight crews woke up in the wrong cities this morning after failing to make yesterday’s journeys, as a result airlines have been unable to keep to their schedules.

Passengers are advised to call their airline or the airport before starting their journey today. Most of the cancellations have affected British Airways’ European routes. The cafes and restaurants at Heathrow were kept open all night as an estimated 1,000 passengers waited in the terminals until this morning. Yesterday saw 92 arrivals and 112 departures from the airport cancelled.
