Hertfordshire Fire Service said poor visibility due to foggy conditions could have been a factor in the pile-up which happened north of junction 4. A Tate and Lyle tanker involved in the crash was carrying syrup which spilled on to the road. The man who died had been sitting in the front seat of the coach which was travelling from London to Luton airport. Police said a total of 50 people were involved in the accident and 15 of those were treated at the scene for minor injuries. One man was taken to hospital by ambulance and underwent an operation for whiplash and arm injuries. A further 18 people went to hospital themselves and were later discharged, including one person who had suffered chest injuries.
