'Februaristorm' veroorzaakt chaos in Amerika.
De Amerikaanse staat Montana heeft een noodtoestand afgekondigd na een ongewoon vroege en hevige sneeuwstorm. Op sommige plekken ligt een meter sneeuw. Talloze inwoners zitten zonder stroom.Verrast door de onverwachte sneeuwval doen boeren wanhopig hun best om hun vee en oogst te beschermen. "Het gaat een enorme economische impact hebben op de regio", zei rancher Jack Holden tegen The New York Times. Hij runt een boerderij van 4000 hectare.
Inwoners worden gewaarschuwd niet de weg op te gaan, en verscheidene snelwegen zijn gesloten voor het verkeer. De storm was 'zonder precedent', twitterde gouverneur Steve Bullock

In de hele staat zijn eeuwenoude records gesneuveld. De laatste keer dat er zo vroeg in het seizoen zo veel sneeuw viel in Montana, was in 1934, zeggen meteorologen. De laatste keer dat inwoners van de stad Missoula eind september sneeuw zagen was in 1893.
"Het is een februaristorm in september. We zijn dit soort stormen gewend. Alleen niet in deze tijd van het jaar", zei het hoofd van Glacier National Park, Jeff Mow, in een interview met The New York Times. "Ons weer gaat van het ene uiterste naar het andere."
