Typhoon "Mangkhut" over the Marianas, track takes it toward Philippines and Taiwan as a Super TyphoonTyphoon "Mangkhut" is dropping heavy rain and producing wind gusts of up to 204 km/h (126 mph) across Northern Marianas and Guam on September 10. The storm is heading westward towards the northern Philippines and Taiwan and is forecast to reach a Super Typhoon strength before it enters Luzon Strait.
At 06:00 UTC on September 10, the center of Typhoon "Mangkhut" was located about 109 km (68 mph) northeast of Guam. The typhoon is tracking westward at 31 km/h (19 mph) with maximum sustained winds of 167 km/h (103 mph) and gusts to 204 km/h (126 mph), making it a Category 2 hurricane equivalent on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale.
Animated multispectral imagery shows a large consolidated system with tightly-curved banding deeding into a cloud-filled 26 km (16 miles) wide eye.
The cyclone is tracking westward at a relatively fast pace and is forecast to further strengthen and reach Super Typhoon strength by 06:00 UTC, September 13 as it heads toward the northern Philippines and Taiwan.
The current forecast track takes Mangkhut on a west-northwestward track in the Philippine Sea and into the Luzon Strait after 06:00 UTC, September 14.
Favorable environmental conditions will prevail, bringing intensity to a peak of 250 km/h (155 mph) or higher by that time. After that, interaction with Taiwan and Luzon will weaken the system slightly down to 240 km/h (150 mph).

Bijna 2,5 miljoen mensen in het zuiden van China zijn zondag geëvacueerd vanwege de tyfoon Mangkhut. De zware storm heeft op de Filipijnen al aan bijna vijftig mensen het leven gekost.De evacuaties vonden plaats in de Chinese provincie Guangdong, meldt staatspersbureau Xinhua. Mangkhut kwam zondag aan bij de stad Jiangmen.
Boven het vasteland van China verliest de tyfoon langzaam kracht. Mangkhut bereikt windsnelheden van meer dan 200 kilometer en is daarmee de sterkste tyfoon van dit jaar.
Door de tyfoon liggen de werkzaamheden op meer dan 29.000 bouwplaatsen stil. Daarnaast zijn 623 toeristische attracties gesloten en hebben meer dan 48.000 vissersboten de opdracht gekregen om terug te keren naar de haven.
Grote schade in Hongkong en Macau
Mangkhut richtte eerder op zondag veel schade aan in Hongkong en het Chinese gokparadijs Macau. Zo kwamen veel straten blank te staan en vielen bomen om. In Shenzhen, ten noorden van Hongkong, kwamen ruim 130.000 huishoudens zonder stroom te zitten.
De autoriteiten in Hongkong overwegen het waarschuwingsniveau te verlagen. Als dat gebeurt, kan de beurs maandag gewoon open. Alle scholen en universiteiten in Hongkong blijven maandag dicht.

Tientallen doden op de Filipijnen
Op de Filipijnen leidde de tyfoon dit weekend eveneens tot veel schade. Ook kwamen tientallen mensen om het leven. De meeste doden vielen in bergrijke gebieden door aardverschuivingen veroorzaakt door Mangkhut.Er worden nog meer dan vijftig mensen vermist. Reddingswerkers zijn nog volop aan het werk. De autoriteiten vrezen dat het dodental de komende dagen zal stijgen.
Meer dan 30.000 mensen op de Filipijnen zijn ondergebracht in noodopvangcentra.
