Veel doden bij aardbeving op de grens van Irak en Iran
Zware aardbeving treft Iran en Irak: dodental loopt hard op

Door een aardbeving zijn in de westelijke Iraanse provincie Kermanshah, aan de grens met Irak, zeker 200 doden gevallen. Volgens de Iraanse staats-tv zijn er meer dan 1600 gewonden.
In Irak zijn zes doden gevallen en meer dan 500 mensen gewond geraakt.
Veel mensen onder het puin
De grootste schade deed zich voor in de plaats Darbandikhan, 75 kilometer ten oosten van de stad Sulaimaniya. Het voornaamste ziekenhuis raakte zwaar beschadigd en zit zonder elektriciteit, zei de Iraaks-Koerdische minister van Gezondheid, Rekwat Hama Rasheed.
De beving met een kracht van 7,3 deed zich voor om 19.18 uur Nederlandse tijd. Het epicentrum lag op 32 kilometer van de stad Halabja in Iraaks Koerdistan, net over de grens in Iran.
Aan beide zijden van de grens stortten gebouwen in. In de grenssteden in Irak is de noodtoestand uitgeroepen. Het reddingswerk zal vanochtend worden opgestart. Onder al het puin zouden zich nog veel mensen bevinden. De verwachting is dat het dodental nog oploopt.

Het dodental van de zware aardbeving nabij de grens van Irak en Iran afgelopen zondag is opgelopen tot 530. Meer dan achtduizend mensen zijn gewond geraakt. Het Iraanse persbureau IRNA laat dinsdag weten dat alleen in Iran al zeker 530 doden zijn gevallen. In Irak zijn tien doden gevallen en honderden mensen gewond geraakt.

De beving is de dodelijkste in Iran in meer dan tien jaar tijd. Zo'n 30.000 huizen raakten beschadigd. Twee dorpen werden volledig vernietigd.
Kampen
De Iraanse president Hassan Rohani bezocht het getroffen gebied in de ochtend en beloofde dat de regering "alles in het werk zal stellen om de problemen zo snel mogelijk op te lossen''.
Duizenden mensen zitten in geïmproviseerde kampen, terwijl vele anderen ervoor kozen om de tweede nacht in de open lucht door te brengen, ondanks de lage temperaturen. Er wordt gevreesd voor naschokken.
Door de aardbeving ontstonden ook landverschuivingen in het gebied, deze bemoeilijken het reddingswerk.
Epicentrum
Het epicentrum van de beving lag op 32 kilometer van de stad Halabja in het Koerdische deel van Irak en kon in de hoofdsteden Teheran en Baghdad gevoeld worden. Zeker veertien provincies in Iran zijn getroffen door de beving. Er zijn naschokken gemeten met een kracht van 4,5 en 4,7.
De beving deed zich voor om 19.18 uur Nederlandse tijd. De Amerikaanse seismologische dienst USGS stelde de kracht bij van 7,2 naar 7,3.
