An earthquake struck offshore near New Zealand, causing shaking in Invercargill.
US geological service has recorded it at magnitude 6.8.
The quake, which struck just after 7pm, was centred more than 200 kilometres offshore from New Zealand past Auckland Islands.
Geonet said it was still determining the magnitude, expected to be in the high-6s and was assessing the tsunami risk.
A tsunami was unlikely.
A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said they had received "not one call for help" following the shake
