Heavy April snowfall brings Sarajevo to a standstill
Bosnian capital Sarajevo was hit by a heavy overnight snowfall today as cold outbreak spread through the Balkans. More heavy snowfall is expected throughout the region in the days ahead.Local media is reporting massive traffic jams, trees bent under the weight of the snow and power outages.
According to BalkanInsight, the severe snowfall has also caused damage to the power network and several areas within the wider Sarajevo area have lost power.
"The grim weather also caused water pumps to break down, so many Sarajevans have also lost running water. Authorities are currently in the field, fixing the damages," it said.
Blizzard conditions were reported today in Hungary, Croatia, Romania and other surrounding countries. Severe weather is expected to continue throughout the region at least until April 25. After a brief break, another cold wave is expected to roll in.
