Residents left homeless after storms rip roofs from Sunshine Coast unit blocks

Residents of two Sunshine Coast unit blocks that had their roofs torn off during wild storms last night have told 9NEWS a "mini-tornado" caused destruction in 15 seconds. 

The Mooloolaba street of Akeringa Place was one of the south-east Queensland areas hardest hit by severe weather, with winds stronger than 100km/h tearing off the roofs and snapping power poles

Unit resident Kumar told 9NEWS his parents were sitting on the lounge when the unit's glass door exploded. The roof was then torn away, and their possessions were destroyed by the wild weather. 

"Everything's happened in 15 seconds and we lost everything," he said. 

The weather system that produced all the rain has since moved away, leaving authorities to determine the extent of flooding across the southeast. (9NEWS

"My parents are still in shock, I couldn't believe myself [that it] happened in 15 seconds. I don't know where we're going to stay now."

Kumar's wife said she was trying to hold the sliding door shut when it "exploded" on her.

Another resident, Julius Toole, said he and his fiancée pulled their small dog Rusty from the rubble. 

Power poles also snapped, bringing live wires down over the street. (9NEWS)

"The whole roof got ripped off and I came out and we were just looking into the sky and the water," he told 9NEWS.

"My partner was screaming and we dug through the rubble and found this guy under the roof and all the wires and stuff. It was probably the scariest two minutes of our life."

In other parts of south-east Queensland, emergency services have expressed frustration after dozens of motorists drove across flooded roads.

A family of three took refuge on the roof of their car and waved for help after becoming stranded in floodwaters in Coopers Plains, south-west of Brisbane.

A man from the car swam to safety to get help, and told 9NEWS his stranded sister and mother couldn't swim.

"The water came really quick. When we just got here the water is not too much, it wasn't too high, but because everywhere blocked we just tried to go in and then we got stuck there," the rescued mother told 9NEWS.

Several streets in Brisbane were also flooded after 106mm of rain fell on the city yesterday, with more than half the rainfall total recorded in the evening.

Redcliffe and Caboolture streets were also fully or partially closed, with fallen trees and flooding causing problems.

Flood warnings remain in place for the Stanley River at Woodford,  Warrill Creek at Harrisville and Amberley, Wallam Creek at Bollon and Cardiff, and the Mungallala Creek.

There are also flood warnings for the Thomson and Barcoo Rivers.

The weather system that produced all the rain has since moved away, leaving authorities and residents to clean up..

Seqwater will be release water from Somerset Dam into the larger Wivenhoe Dam, northwest of Brisbane, this morning.

"These releases are not expected to cause the lake level in Wivenhoe Dam to increase by more than 0.5 metres in the next 24-hour period," Seqwater said.
