De hevige bosbranden in het westen van de Verenigde Staten breiden zich volgens deskundigen van NOAA uit. Zeker de hele week zal de situatie zorgelijk blijven.
De komende dagen krijgen veel bedreigde gebieden te maken met een hete, erg droge en vlagerige wind. Vooral in de middag en avond is dat het geval. Het is een ideale wind om vuurhaarden verder uit te laten breiden.
De vele bosbranden in het westen zijn een gevolg van hoge temperaturen, droogte en bliksemontladingen uit vrijwel droge buien. Daarbij wordt een groot deel van de westkust getroffen door langdurige droogte. Vertegenwoordigers van de brandweer zeggen dat vuurhaarden zich razendsnel uitbreiden door droogte en gebrek aan watervoorraad.
Getroffen zijn de staten Californië, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Nevada en Utah. Voor Arizona is er een kleiner gevaar, omdat hier ook onweersbuien met regen worden verwacht.
