A lightning strike has killed 11 people and injured 18 more in a remote indigenous village in Colombia.
The electrical storm happened in the early morning hours Monday. The dead and injured were among 60 members of the Wiwa people, mostly adults, that were gathered in a hut for a spiritual ritual when the storm broke. CNN reports 13 of the injured were airlifted to hospital from the community, in the Sierra Nevada region in the north of the country. Community member Bernardo Gil Miscote said he had left the building to get a drink, when the heard thunder rumbling over the mountains. "Two minutes later, when I returned, the hut was on fire, and you could only hear men crying out," he told El Tiempo newspaper. Colombian president Juan Manuel Santos tweeted condolences, and the military and police went to the area to assist. Colombian television was filled with images of the burned-down building, along with survivors shocked by what had happened. "The Wiwa community has never had anything like this," Rafael Mujica, speaking to El Tiempo, said. "A year ago, a [ceremonial hall] in the village of Kogui was struck by lightning, but nothing happened."
