Het zuiden van de Verenigde Staten wordt sinds zondag getroffen door zware stormen, waarbij al 21 doden vielen. Gisteren raasde een tornado door het stadje Tupelo in de staat Mississippi, de geboorteplaats van Elvis Presley.

Daarbij viel minstens één dodelijk slachtoffer. De stad met 35.000 inwoners zit grotendeels zonder stroom, er werd een avondklok ingesteld.
De meeste doden vielen zondag, toen tornado's wagens in het rond deden vliegen in onder meer Arkansas. De twister die door Tupelo raasde bracht schade toe aan honderden huizen.
Hulpverleners gaan van huis tot huis, zo verklaarde de politiechef tegenover Reuters. De burgemeester roept iedereen op binnen te blijven.

Tupelo, Mississippi is the latest location since the weekend that has been strafed by violent weather. The city's mayor says a large tornado that struck this afternoon has damaged homes, downed trees and power lines and injured several people. (April 28)
