Winds from the first named storm of the year fanned wildfires in Georgia and northern Florida today, more than three weeks ahead of the official start of the Atlantic hurricane season. Subtropical Storm Andrea, with maximum sustained winds of 40 mph and higher gusts, was centered about 135 miles southeast of Savannah, Georgia, at 5 a.m. ET today.

Subtropical Storm Andrea, the season's first named storm, was downgraded to subtropical depression status Thursday. In its 11 a.m. ET bulletin, the National Hurricane Center said the tropical storm watch along the Georgia and Florida coasts was lifted.
