Torrential rains that flooded roads and runways kept Milwaukee's main airport shut at least through midday on Friday, while the city braced for another batch of storms. The closure of General Mitchell International Airport was due "to flooding on the airfield and roadways leading to the airport," the airport's website said. The airport, which handled nearly 8 million passengers last year, shut on Thursday night as a parade of storms dumped 5-1/2 inches of rain on the city on Thursday. A rain gauge in the suburb of Shorewood recorded nearly a foot of water. Cars were submerged, streets and highways were flooded, and a sinkhole swallowed a sport-utility vehicle and a traffic light. A flash flood watch remained in effect through Saturday morning, the National Weather Service said in an advisory, warning of possible widespread flooding. Also under flood watch were parts of northern Illinois and western Iowa.

"Additional heavy rainfall will exacerbate the already-bad situation as many areas of high water remain from flooding on Thursday," the Weather Service said. The Weather Service cited 16 reports of tornadoes spotted across the northern Midwest on Thursday, including 10 in southeast Wisconsin. Damage was not extensive.

In the eastern half of the United States, hot, humid air pumped up from the South by a high pressure ridge prompted the Weather Service to issue heat advisories in 17 states. Milwaukee residents could not turn to Lake Michigan for relief from the heat because its beaches were ordered closed through Sunday because the deluge forced the city to open floodgates, sending untreated sewage into the lake. Even the rain-stricken region's farmers needed relief. "The rains across Iowa, southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois are more than what the guys want," said Roy Huckabay, a grains market analyst in Chicago for The Linn Group.

Powerful storms spawned by intense heat and humidity produced flooding and tornadoes in the Midwestern United States on Saturday, disrupting travel and cutting power to thousands of homes. The National Weather Service said more than 7.5 inches of rain -- the amount the city would see over two months during a normal summer -- fell at Midway Airport in Chicago in the past day.
"A large area is being impacted by this system," said Jack Hales, a weather service forecaster based in Norman, Oklahoma.
"But some of the heavier rain totals ... have been in Chicago. The water content in the atmosphere is very high."
The National Weather Service issued severe weather alerts for many areas in Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Iowa and Minnesota, and flood watches for dozens of counties. Forecasters said a similar weather pattern was developing in Pennsylvania and New York, where a rare tornado watch was issued late on Friday for New York City and northern New Jersey.
The Illinois Department of Transportation said the Eisenhower Expressway, which connects Chicago with its western suburbs, was closed by flooding just after dawn. The Chicago Transit Authority said service was disrupted on at least half of its train routes and many buses were rerouted. About 50,000 customers were without power in northeastern Illinois on Saturday, the utility Commonwealth Edison said. In Iowa, a tornado touched down late on Friday near the town of Indianola in central Iowa, damaging property but causing no injuries.
Dan Sheets of the National Weather Service said that over the last three days, six to 10 inches of rain had fallen in the northeastern corner of Iowa. Wisconsin governor Jim Doyle declared a state of emergency on Friday after torrential rains flooded homes and opened sinkholes in Milwaukee and closed the city's main airport.
