At least six people were killed and four injured in southern Peru after a night of heavy rain sent a landslide of rocks and mud gushing into the Andean city of Ayacucho, police said today. The victims were four men and two women whose car was buried in a flood of water, mud and stones in the city centre last night.
Another 15 cars and their occupants are believed to have been swept away as water flooded city homes and stores, according to civil defence authorities who fear the death toll will rise further. Several hours of heavy rainfall sent a torrent of water, mud and stones from the surrounding mountains rushing into the streets of Ayacucho, a colonial city 885km south of Lima, Peruvian radio RPP reported.
