It's a mixed bag of mass weather chaos!
Severe thunderstorms, snow storms, ice storms, blizzards and floods are all on the agenda over the next few days as a monstrous storm system sweeps across the central Plains of the U.S. The system is already responsible for tornado warnings in east TX, where supercells are now developing; a tornado watch has been issued for most of east TX, extending into southeast OK and extreme western LA.
As precip develops on the southern end of the system, it will track northeast into Arkansas, where more flooding is expected from 2-4" of rain; it appears likely that this last blast from 2009 will be enough to set all-time records for yearly rainfall in Arkansas.
Elsewhere, frozen precip will be the dominant story over the next few days, from Oklahoma to the upper Mississippi valley and Great Lakes region. Record-snowfall is possible over parts of the northern prairies where it appears that totals anywhere from 1-2 feet will be common. Some locations in IA, MN and WI should see substantially more than 24", depending on the track of the low and the speed with which it exits the region. Elsewhere, parts of the southern Plains could also see record or near-record snow, with several models forecasting 7-10" or more for portions of Oklahoma! The reason for this chaos is a massive upper-level low pressure system currently ejecting from the desert southwest and southern Rockies, with another one right on its heels in the northern Rockies. The NAM and GFS models show these lows essentially engulfing each at around 00z on Dec 25, leaving one enormous low to wreak havoc over the center of the country. As a strong surface low begins to develop over Arkansas later today, plenty of moisture will be streaming into the middle and upper MS valley region from the southeast. When all of this combines with the cold temperatures from the arctic airmass over the region, this will lead to almost non-stop precip beginning tonight and lasting through Christmas day.

Great Plains braces for treacherous Christmas Eve
A large swath of the nation's midsection -- from the northern Plains all the way down to north Texas -- was under a winter storm warning early Christmas Eve. The National Weather Service included the entire state of Minnesota in its warning.
The storm is expected to dump between 15 to 20 inches of snow over much of Minnesota, according to CNN affiliate KARE. The city of Golden Valley, a western suburb of Minneapolis, has already declared a snow emergency. The Great Plains storm had the Minneapolis, Minnesota, area "right in the teeth" of it, CNN meteorologist Chad Myers said.
"There's potential for the northwest part of the city to see an almost record-breaking snow event," Myers said. Winds could gust up to 40 to 50 miles per hour, creating blizzard-like conditions for hours, he said. The inclement weather is the second major storm system to hit the United States in a week. Last week, a nor'easter blanketed a swath of the East Coast in snow, forcing the cancellation of hundreds of flights over the weekend.
The National Weather Service said early Thursday that heavy snow will hit central South Dakota. "Gusty northwest winds" are expected with "frigid wind chill readings." Freezing rain is possible across parts of Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois and Indiana, the service said.
Long lines have clogged airports around Chicago, Illinois, reports CNN affiliate WLS-TV. A mix of rain, ice and snow caused Southwest Airlines to cancel departures for much of Wednesday afternoon before resuming take-offs. Many travelers were unable to reach their final destination. Melissa McMillen's first flight with her 5-month-old did not go well. A layover in Chicago from Ohio to Oklahoma has turned into an indefinite stay, WLS reports.
"We got here, went to get a bite to eat and on our way back to our gate then we saw our flight was cancelled on the screen. We had to call and try to rebook."
Across Chicago late Wednesday, drivers were being urged to stay off the roads, WLS said. Holiday travelers in the Denver, Colorado, area, left earlier than they planned because of the threat of inclement weather, according to CNN affiliate 7NEWS in Denver.Near blizzard conditions are expected Thursday in parts of Oklahoma, reports CNN affiliate KOCO in Oklahoma City.
In East Texas, a tornado watch remained in effect early Christmas Eve, according to CNN affiliate KLTV in Tyler. Kevin Brownlee, public information officer for the Longview, Texas Police Department, said a tornado touched down south of Highway 80.
The tornado was blamed for a ruptured gas line and ripping the roof off a home.

Zware sneeuwbuien trekken over centrum VS
Zware sneeuwbuien trekken vandaag over het centrum van de Verenigde Staten. Dat gaat gepaard met ijzel, en dat net op het moment dat miljoenen Amerikanen naar hun familie trekken om kerstavond te vieren.
"Reizen riskeert zeer lastig te worden in dit weer", zo waarschuwt Pat Slattery, woordvoerder van de National Weather Service. "We raden de mensen aan om vrijdag te vertrekken en anders om hun reis uit veiligheidsoverwegingen in etappes uit te voeren. Het enorme onweer zal het volledige centrum van de VS treffen, van de Canadese grens tot Texas." Er wordt aan de noordkant van het onweer tot 60 cm sneeuw voorspeld terwijl er aan de zuidkant overstromingsgevaar dreigt. Meer dan 260 vluchten werden woensdag al afgelast op de luchthavens van Chicago.

Noodtoestand door sneeuw in Oklahoma
Hadden we in ons land vanaf 18 december een tijd overlast door sneeuwval en gladheid. Dit stelde weinig voor als we het vergelijken met wat er zich nu in de VS afspeelt.
Sneeuw en extreme kou zorgen voor veel overlast in het midden van de VS. In de Amerikaanse staat Oklahoma is zelfs de noodtoestand afgekondigd, in verband met een sneeuwstorm die het midden van het land teistert. Zo'n tien staten gaan gebukt onder de weersomstandigheden. In verschillende staten hebben de autoriteiten vliegvelden afgesloten, waardoor veel vakantievluchten zijn geschrapt. In North Dakota, South Dakota en Texas zijn veel snelwegen dicht.
Bij verkeersongelukken zijn al zeker 19 mensen om het leven gekomen. De wegen zijn spekglad en het zicht is minimaal door de sneeuw. De sneewustorm gaat samen met hevige kou. In de staat Montana vriest het lokaal 34 graden. De sneeuwstorm in de Verenigde Staten, de zwaarste in jaren, trekt nu naar het oosten en zal waarschijnlijk voor meer overlast zorgen.

Even fish can't escape Sunshine State's cold
Freakish cold weather continued to grip the South, with snow flurries spotted around Orlando and a record low set for Miami, and forecasters said Sunday that more of the same was expected. About 100,000 tropical fish being raised on a fish farm in South Florida couldn't bear the cold. Michael Breen, 43, who owns Breen Acres Aquatics in the small town of Loxahatchee Groves just north of Miami, said temperatures dropped below 30 degrees overnight, leaving ice on his 76 ponds. The ponds should be green because of algae bloom that feeds baby fish, he said.
"But all the ponds are crystal clear and fish are laying on the bottom. What we see on the surface died two days ago," he said, referring to the dead fish found floating Sunday morning. Breen estimated he lost $535,000 in business because of the cold. Breen said his Florida town, which raises everything from tropical birds and fish to organic produce and palm trees, was holding on to the little that was left from the cold. "Everybody is just wiped out. It's that bad," he said.
Freeze warning overnight
The National Weather Service issued a hard freeze warning for South Florida from Sunday night to Monday morning. A freeze watch will continue through Tuesday. Northern Florida residents will feel temperatures drop to the lower 20s and mid-teens.
On Saturday night, a temperature of 35 degrees set a record that had stood since 1970, said Joel Rothfuss with the National Weather Service in Miami. He said a record low of 37 on Monday, which was set in 1927, could also be broken, with the forecast saying it would drop to 35 degrees again. For the first time in at least 30 years, Miami Metrozoo shut its doors because it was too cold. Atlanta's zoo was closed because the trails were iced over, officials said. Temperatures in Atlanta stayed in the 30s over the weekend with lows in the teens. The average high for Atlanta is in the 50s with lows in the 30s.
5 die in ice accidents
In a suburb north of Atlanta, two teens died Saturday after falling through the ice on a partially frozen pond. The surviving teen was in stable condition at a hospital, said Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services Capt. Tommy Rutledge. He said the three, ages 13 to 15, were playing and sliding on the semi-frozen pond when the ice broke. "I'm sure that that frozen over pond was probably enticing to the kids," he said. The start of the Walt Disney World Marathon in Orlando was 28 degrees before dawn, though it climbed into the 40s by late afternoon. Average highs in the central Florida city this time of year are in the lows 70s.
Ice does not freeze uniformly with some spots only an inch thick, he said. They had been warning children to stay off frozen-over ponds, he said. In Vermont, state police said a snowmobiling accident on a partially frozen lake killed three people Saturday, including a 3-year-old girl. Police say three snowmobiles carrying a total of six people went through ice on Lake Dunmore near Salisbury at around noon Saturday. Killed were: 50-year-old Kevin Flynn, of Whiting; 24-year-old Carrie Flynn, of Whiting; and 3-year-old Bryanna Popp.

Florida is normaal gezien dé winterbestemming met zongarantie. Maar dit jaar is het er historisch koud: het vriest er net niet. Met man en macht wordt er geprobeerd om de citrusoogst te redden. In Miami was het dit weekend slechts 1,6 graden Celsius. Dat is de laagste temperatuur die er sinds 1970 gemeten werd. In Key West, ten zuiden van Miami, was het gisteren 5 graden Celsius: eveneens de laagste temperatuur in veertig jaar. Bovendien kondigen weersvoorspellers nog koudere temperaturen aan voor de rest van de week.
Citrusoogst
Deze koudegolf is enorm slecht voor de citrusindustrie, die de staat Florida elk jaar miljarden opbrengt. Citruslandbouwers proberen hun oogst te redden door de citroenen en sinaasappels constant met water te besproeien. Maar ook andere oogsten, zoals die van de suikerbieten, dreigen volledig te mislukken door de aanhoudende koude.
Pythons
Dierenbeschermingsorganisaties waarschuwen dat pythons en andere slangen komen schuilen in huizen omdat zij deze koude helemaal niet gewoon zijn. Dit weekend zijn er verschillende dodelijke verkeersongelukken geweest door het koude weer. Wetenschappers melden dat het zeldzaam is dat zo'n koud weer zo'n lange tijd aanhoudt.

In Key West, ten zuiden van Miami, was het gisteren 5 graden Celsius: eveneens de laagste temperatuur in veertig jaar. Bovendien kondigen weersvoorspellers nog koudere temperaturen aan voor de rest van de week.
Citrusoogst
Deze koudegolf is enorm slecht voor de citrusindustrie, die de staat Florida elk jaar miljarden opbrengt. Citruslandbouwers proberen hun oogst te redden door de citroenen en sinaasappels constant met water te besproeien. Maar ook andere oogsten, zoals die van de suikerbieten, dreigen volledig te mislukken door de aanhoudende koude.
Pythons
Dierenbeschermingsorganisaties waarschuwen dat pythons en andere slangen komen schuilen in huizen omdat zij deze koude helemaal niet gewoon zijn. Dit weekend zijn er verschillende dodelijke verkeersongelukken geweest door het koude weer. Wetenschappers melden dat het zeldzaam is dat zo'n koud weer zo'n lange tijd aanhoudt.
