About 40,000 homes in Sydney's north are without power this evening as storms move through the area. Energy Australia says suburbs including Hornsby, Wahroongah, Cherrybrook, Beecroft and Berowra have been affected by the blackout. Kylie Yates from Energy Australia says a lightning strike probably triggered the problem.
At about quarter to five there was obviously a massive lighting strike so all that power went at once, it's obviously hit some equipment, she said. Our crews are out investigating what damage the network has sustained and our other engineers are also working out how we can re-route power from other areas of the network so we can get power restored as quickly as possible.
