Strong winds and heavy rain have lashed the Perth metropolitan area causing widespread damage and power cuts. A storm which hit Perth early this afternoon carried winds up to 110 kilometres an hour.
The Fire and Emergency Services Authority (FESA) says fallen trees are blocking roads in Rockingham to the south of Perth, Canning and Hilton and about 60,000 homes are without power, including 3000 in the South West. Allen Gale from FESA says the storm has also damaged properties. "That's resulted in iron being lifted off some roofs, quite a few trees down," he said. We're also aware of garden sheds, pergolas that have been flipped as well and in the city there's problems alongside the freeway because of unusually high tides and the wind action is causing water spray to come up over the freeway." The Weather Bureau says more heavy rain is expected.

PERTH'S record dry spell ended in spectacular fashion today, with a wild storm dumping heavy rain and leaving over 60,000 households without power.U ntil this morning, no rain had fallen in Perth in May, the first time this had occurred since records began in 1876.
Perth had received 16mm by 2pm, with more falling in outlying areas. Nearly 60,000 properties in Perth and 3500 in Western Australia's southwest have been left without power after strong winds and lightning cut power lines. Western Power said the largest outage was in the southern suburb of Riverton after lightning struck a sub- station, resulting in around 10,000 customers losing power. Western Power said other blackouts had been caused by debris blowing into powerlines causing damage and in some cases bringing down lines. West Australia's State Emergency Service received over 160 calls for help, with the southern suburb of Rockingham most affected. In one case part of the roof of a Silver Chain building near Mandurah was damaged. The blackouts also affected the Fremantle and Armadale train lines and more than 40 sets of traffic lights were out across the Perth area.
But farmers have welcomed the rain, which comes just in time for the start of the cropping season tomorrow. The weather bureau is forecasting thunderstorms to continue tomorrow with gusty winds and for more rain on Saturday.

Western Power says about 2000 homes remain without electricity after Perth's wild weather cut off power to around 9000 residences yesterday. The utility has suspended all planned work and expects to have power restored to most homes by tonight.
However, Western Power says around 500 houses may not have their power reconnected by this evening, and some of them face a third night without electricity.
