A flood of mud around 1.5 meters deep crashed through a housing complex near the Siring River in Samarinda, East Kalimantan, on Tuesday night. The flood destroyed several houses in its path and dragged any movable objects including motorcycles and cars with it, citizens said. The flood lasted for around 30 minutes, with no casualties reported on Tuesday.
The flood was the result of a week of almost continuous rainfall in Samarinda. Citizens, however, say the mud originated from a mining site in the area, managed by PT Lana Harita. Samarinda city spokesperson H.M. Faisal said the company had a permit from the central government to mine coal in the area.
