Nine people died after mudslides overran homes in a town outside Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, emergency officials said.
The fatalities occurred in Itaipava, 80 kilometres from Rio. Heavy rains over the past few days have made the ground unstable.
Reports say those killed included a five-year-old and the child's 70-year-old grandmother. Twelve other people were hospitalised with injuries. Officials were searching mud-filled houses for other casualties. The municipality has declared a local emergency zone for the town, which was being used as a weekend getaway for Rio residents seeking a respite from the crowds and carnival madness in the city.
