A joyous occasion turned into tragedy after lightning struck and killed a boy marking his fourth birthday in the central Philippine island of Negros, a local paper reported on Wednesday. The boy was walking home Tuesday afternoon with his mother, Leonidas Buenafe, through a canefield in the district of Central Ma-ao in Bago City when he was hit by lightning, the Visayan Daily Star reported in its website (www.visayandailystar.com).
The boy’s aunt Mylene Buenafe said the boy did not sustain burns on his body but his hair was burned. She said the victim was declared dead at the Bago District Hospital. Investigation showed that the boy and his mother had gone to the Central Ma-ao Public Market to buy the local delicacy called pancit and bihon (noodles) for his birthday celebration. They had passed by Mylene’s house and a variety store before heading home through the canefield.
Interestingly, a teenager was also killed by lightning and three mine workers were injured a day earlier in the city of Sipalay, the same paper reported earlier.
