A family of four hid under a stairwell in their Bladen County house Saturday night as a violent storm passed through the area, said Chief Deputy Phillip Little of the Bladen County Sheriff’s Office. None of the family suffered injuries, but the roof of their house was torn off. A meteorologist with the National Weather Service could not confirm whether the storm was a tornado late Saturday night.
The house is located on Twisted Hickory Road between Bladenboro and Dublin. A nearby outbuilding caught fire, possibly from lightning damage, and trees and power lines were felled, Little said. The meteorologist said the same storm moved on to Sampson County, just east of Clinton. In Cumberland County, heavy rain fell Saturday night, but the National Weather Service said forecasters didn’t anticipate flooding problems.
Meteorologist Ryan Ellis said the Fayetteville area was expected to receive a little less than an inch of rain, despite wet conditions and a tornado watch that was in effect until midnight. Ellis said the county had received just less than half an inch of rain by early Saturday evening. He said an additional half-inch was possible by daybreak. The heaviest rain arrived Saturday night about 8:45 and slowed by 9, Ellis said.
The rain was not expected to result in flash flooding, he said.
