The National Weather Service say preliminary observations indicate an EF1 tornado moved through Lauderdale County around 11 a.m. Wednesday. It downed trees and power lines and damaged several homes and a business in the Clarkdale area. The violent wind, moving 90 to 95 miles per hour, knocked down power lines and trees, blocking access to the heavily damaged homes at the end of Sam Gray Road.
Someone called and said you better get home in a hurry, I think there has been a tornado touching down, said resident Lee Chambers. Emergency responders immediately checked on homeowners, making sure no one was trapped by the many fallen trees. Just about every structure on Sam Gray Road has some form of damage, but the worst is a residence where most of the roof was ripped off. Friends and neighbors spent the rest of the day moving furniture, trying to prevent further water damage.
I thought it was hail on top of the metal roof because it got so loud all of a sudden. It was a roar, said Chuck Sanders, who was doing some air conditioning work at a friend's house. When the roaring stopped, Sanders joined the extensive clean up effort underway. Lauderdale Emergency Management Agency director David Sharp said the damage was isolated to a narrow path. It included the Calvary Masonic Lodge across from New Hope Baptist Church on Highway 145 and several other roads in the immediate area.
With several days of severe weather ahead, emergency responders are on standby, not knowing what could come our way next. Mississippi Power was on the scene quickly to restore electricity. Once the trees covering the road were cut and moved, residents could make it through to evaluate the damage. No injuries were reported to authorities. The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency says one business was completely destroyed and two homes received major damage. Nine homes and one business received minor damage. The damage is still being assessed.
No other twisters have been spotted, but a system that has stalled out along a line from central Louisiana to east Mississippi is expected to bring more severe weather. Residents throughout the state are urged to stay informed about the weather over the next several days. The National Weather Service in Jackson is predicting the potential for several more rounds of severe weather which could include damaging winds, flooding, hail and even tornadoes.

Authorities said at least two tornadoes touched down in southern Mississippi late Wednesday and early Thursday, damaging homes and businesses and injuring some residents in a small town. No fatalities were immediately reported, but authorities and rescue crews were still responding to the damaged areas north of Magee, said Stephanie Bryant, a dispatch supervisor with the Simpson County Sheriff's Department.
Mayor Jimmy Clyde told NBC's "Today" show that the town was in "dire straits." We have no power, he said. "Most of the roads into and out of our city are blocked. It damaged our water supply. We don't know the extent of the damage as of yet, because we're waiting for daylight."
There were other reports of downed trees, power lines and damaged homes across the Deep South from a band of severe weather that spawned heavy thunderstorms and high winds. Another reported tornado touched down in Mississippi's Lauderdale County on Wednesday night, heavily damaging nine homes and a business, but no injuries were reported, Mississippi Emergency Management Agency officials said.

Severe weather across the South unleashed tornadoes in rural Mississippi, including one that shattered dozens of homes, flattened a church and injured at least 17 people, authorities said Thursday. There were no immediate reports of fatalities, Magee Mayor Jimmy Clyde said. The most seriously injured were hospitalized, but most others had minor injuries.
The twister was reported around 1:30 a.m., and swept through Mississippi's pine-covered hill country as severe thunderstorms rumbled across several Southeast states. Power blackouts affected tens of thousands of Louisiana residents, and authorities reported damage to some Alabama homes. Georgia residents also braced for potentially heavy rains.
This is like reliving Hurricane Katrina all over again and that's no fun, Clyde told The Associated Press. We're getting a lot of help in here. That's the thing about Mississippi, everybody just helps each other in times like this. Clyde said authorities were attempting to restore power after utility lines toppled on roads littered with tree branches and metal scrap. Magee's 16-member police force fanned out before dawn and kept up the work after daylight. He said homes in some areas were "basically leveled" and there was extensive damage just outside the city limits. More...

Fierce thunderstorms rolled across the South on Friday for a second day, kicking up a tornado in Alabama that overturned a mobile home. Meanwhile, residents in a south Mississippi community cleaned up after a twister that injured 28 people a day earlier. Heavy rain, high winds and possible tornadoes also toppled trees and damaged several homes in southern Louisiana during the night, according to reports received by the National Weather Service. One person was injured.
In Alabama, the tornado struck near the Gulf Coast about 4:30 a.m. Friday, roughing up the occupants of a mobile home toppled by winds, authorities said. Several other people reported minor injuries, said Major Anthony Lower with the Baldwin County Sheriff's Department. The storm system was expected to continue eastward across the South during the day, making for an even more difficult cleanup in Magee. Victims of a pre-dawn tornado Thursday were still clearing debris from dozens of flattened homes and businesses.
Twenty-eight people were injured in Magee, but there were still no reports of fatalities from the storms.More...
