Five weeks after the fires that devastated the town, residents of Kinglake are now faced with a flooded road. Much of Victoria has been drenched with rain today. The Heidelberg Kinglake road has been closed overnight between Mittons Bridge road and the Kinglake township. Heavy rain has left water and debris across the road. People who need to get into Kinglake should approach from Whittlesea or Yarra Glen.
Record rainfall
Meanwhile Melbourne has recorded its wettest day of the year with more 18.6 millimetres falling since 9:00am AEDT. Senior forecaster Phil King says there are more showers and thunderstorms to come from the south-west. We've had falls of 20 millimetres right across the eastern ranges and up towards the northern parts, around Albury, Wangaratta, some big storms through there as well, he said.
We had a line of thunderstorms and a change coming through around 10:00am, that gave us a couple of hours of very heavy rain, and then again this afternoon another line.
There's a further line of showers and storms just to the west of Melbourne at the moment and approaching the Melbourne area. A road has been blocked to all traffic between Beechworth and Myrtleford in Victoria's north-east, due to the torrential rain.
Water and mud has covered Buckland Gap Road at Murmungee, making it too dangerous to drive on.
