Storms and a possible tornado swept through south-central Alabama, destroying a church and damaging homes. A storm in Lee County destroyed the First Baptist Church in Salem on Saturday and damaged a nearby school. There were no reports of injuries.
The National Weather Service in Birmingham had crews trying to determine if a tornado touched down in Salem and other locations. Air conditioning units were blown off Wacoochee Junior High School, located between Salem and Bleecker. A number of homes in the area also were damaged by high winds and fallen trees. An 18-wheeler was flipped and came to rest in the highway's median.
First Baptist Pastor Kendra Jacobs says she was devastated when she arrived at the church. She says the church is going to celebrate its 162nd anniversary in a few weeks.
