More than 72,700 homes and businesses in Maine were without power on Tuesday morning after a winter storm dumped heavy wet snow across northern New England on Sunday and Monday, state officials said. For some customers, power may not be restored before Wednesday evening, Lynette Miller, a spokeswoman for the Maine Emergency Management Agency said on Tuesday.
The blast of heavy wet snow snapped tree limbs and utility poles and left some parts of the state, a popular destination for skiers, with roughly two feet of fresh powder. Conditions made it difficult to begin repairs however, Miller said, adding that Maine power crews are getting reinforcements from Canada and other New England states on Tuesday to help with the cleanup.
"We've made very good progress already but the process was slowed on Monday because of the road conditions," she said.
