Rainfall, flooding as Cyclone Dominic moves further inland
Heavy rain is being dumped over Western Australia's north-west as Cyclone Dominic moves further inland. Terry Tonkin from Main Roads says the category 2 cyclone crossed the coast near Onslow a few hours ago causing flash flooding and dangerous conditions for motorists in the Pilbara and Gascoyne.
As the rain comes inland, the floodways will rise, he said. And we're asking people to please do not get out on those roads unless they have to. Be very, very aware that the floodways could rise extremely fast and they are quite aggressive when they're flying across the road.
In the last 24 hours, Onslow has received more than 200 millimetres of rain and recorded winds of more than 100 kph, while more than 100 millimetres of rain has been recorded at Karratha. Volunteer Emergency Services manager for Onslow, George Wilson, says the heavy rain is continuing.
If you look outside, it's actually just horizontal, the rainfall, he said. I've got visibility of about 20 metres and then it kind of just fades away like in a mist.
