Several homes were hit by lightning during violent storms in south-east Queensland last night. The storms damaged roofs and flooded homes and businesses between Logan City and the Gold Coast. Emergency Management Queensland spokeswoman Lisa Martin says the State Emergency Service (SES) responded to 30 calls for help.
The worst affected areas were Coomera and Nerang, Molendinar and Southport and we had some lightning strikes at Mudgeeraba and Helensvale, she said. We know that no one was harmed by lightning strikes. We had about 30 volunteers out on the ground last night from Gold Coast SES fixing up roof leaks.
There was one ceiling collapse that they had to attend to and then there were a few homes struck by lightning that left some holes in roofs that they had to put some tarps on.

Thunderstorms have again struck south-east Queensland, bringing 90 lightning strikes a minute and winds of up to 80 kilometres an hour. The storms blew in from New South Wales last night, uprooting trees and causing widespread blackouts. Energex says more than 30,000 homes lost power as strong winds brought down power lines and uprooted trees.
Crews are still working to restore power to some properties. Energex spokesman Sean Rushby says around 30,000 properties in south-east Queensland were blacked out by the storms. We recorded over 18,000 lightning strikes on the system as the storms swept throughout south-east Queensland and those lightning strikes damaged quite a bit of Energex power network, he said.
He says crews worked all night to restore power to homes and businesses. We had another busy night restoring power throughout south-east Queensland, he said. It was our seventh severe weather event in the last seven weeks. The hardest hit areas ranged from the Gold Coast to the Gold Coast hinterland and the Logan and Beenleigh areas. If you get up in the morning and find you still have no power give us a call on the Energex loss of supply line that's on 13 62 62."
Homes damaged
Emergency crews received 84 calls for help on the Gold Coast and 40 homes were damaged. Emergency Management Queensland (EMQ) spokeswoman Lisa Martin says the region has been pounded by heavy weather for the second night in a row. The Gold Coast got hit again with more damage lots of trees down in Nerang, Mudgeeraba and Worongary, she said.
On the Gold Coast a lot of tarping jobs to fix up those roofs damaged by trees. This time around we had no reports of flashing flooding and no reports of lightning strikes to house. Weather bureau spokesman Craig Mitchell says up to 30 millimetres of rain fell over the Hinze Dam and Coolangatta in under half an hour. More...
