There is wild weather on the way for some parts of the Top End, with a severe weather warning issued for the Katherine region, the north-east Arnhem and northern Roper-McArthur districts. The severe weather is being generated by a tropical low, which has moved from the Gulf of Carpenteria over land and is now centred over Roper Bar.
The low is generating rain along the north and eastern Top End coast.
The Bureau of Meteorology says low is moving west at 14 kilometres per hour, bringing wind gusts of up to 100 kilometres an hour, thunderstorms, large waves and high tides. In Nhulunbuy, 141 millimietres of rain has fallen in the 24 hours since 9:00am yesterday, Yirrkala Gardens has had 136 millimetres and on Groote Eylandt, Alyangula received 123 millimetres.
Forecaster Angeline Prasad says the low is forecast to move west or south-west, and is likely to drag storms with it. She says people should be particularly careful of flooded areas. It's the rainfall that is potentially the most dangerous, so people should keep away from streams that have a tendency to get flooded easily.
People in affected areas are being advised to tie down loose objects, avoid flooded areas, and stay indoors when possible. They are also urged to stay inside where possible.
