The strongest winds recorded in western New South Wales in three years have pummelled parts of the far west overnight. The Weatherzone says wind gusts of 124 kilometres per hour buffeted Bourke's airport.
That site hasn't recorded winds that strong in at least six years, Weatherzone meteorologist Brett Dutschke said. The last time a wind strength stronger than that was recorded anywhere in western NSW was in Narrabri in December 2005. Police say the roof has been torn off the pub at Barringun on the NSW/Queensland border.
Mr Dutschke says the storm hit late yesterday. It also brought a massive dump of about an inch or 25mm of rain in a very short time. The temperature dropped from 36 to 19 degrees in about 20 minutes. It was quite a dramatic change.
