Almost 100,000 homes and businesses are without power in southeast Queensland as severe thunderstorms and destructive winds lash the region. The northern suburbs of Brisbane are the worst affected with 60,000 homes losing power as the storm hit the region late Sunday afternoon.
About ninety-seven-and-a-half-thousand homes and businesses are without supply at the moment which makes it probably one of the biggest storm events in southeast Queensland in about three years, Energex spokesman Mike Swanston said. Energex, which is the main electricity provider in the region, has recorded 3500 direct lightning strikes on its facilities.
About 20,000 customers in other parts of Brisbane and 7500 customers on the Gold Coast are without power. Power is unlikely to be fully restored until Monday, Mr Swanston said. A Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) spokesman said the storm was heading north towards the Sunshine Coast and its hinterland. It's dying off a little bit but we can still expect damaging winds, flash flooding and large hail, the spokesman said.
The Gympie area is also expected to be affected as the storm moves north. The bureau has received reports of golf-ball sized hail on the Gold Coast hinterland, and roofs being torn off houses at Canungra. It is, I suppose consistent with a small tornado touching down, the spokesman said. Brisbane residents have reported heavy rainfall and flash flooding.

A child playing in a drain on Brisbane's northside has been killed as flash flooding sweeps through south-east Queensland. Two children were caught in the drain at Chermside just before 6:00pm AEST. One was rescued, but the other was found dead nearby. Heavy rain and high winds are continuing to hit parts of south east Queensland.
The weather bureau says the thunderstorms are moving north over the Sunshine Coast. The storms have been raging since mid-afternoon. Queensland Emergency Services Minister Neil Roberts is asking people to remain calm and be patient as the SES is struggling to cope with the number of calls for help. In Brisbane we've had around 350 jobs for our SES volunteers and around 90 in the Ipswich Gold Coast region, he said.
So they're very busy and there's been a lot of calls to our 132500 number, getting to the point where it's overloaded so we just ask people to be patient and well get to them as quickly as possible. Danny Donald from Energex says high winds knocked power lines down, cutting electricity to more than 100,000 homes. We've got wires down right across the network from western Brisbane all the way down to the Gold Coast, and some up at Caboolture way, he said. Ipswich City Councillor Paul Tully says the storms flooded roads and blew trees into houses west of Brisbane.
Large trees were bending right over and some of them were snapping off, the wind's caused havoc this afternoon, he said.
There are also reports of flash flooding in the city's north-west. 'One of the worst'
Callers to ABC Local Radio described the storm as one of the worst seen in the city in years. It came through like nothing. I've ever seen, one caller said. It was just this black wall in front of us. The sky was pretty amazing because it had these big green patches, another said. In Brisbane's north, 70 millimetres of rain fell in half an hour at Ferny Hills.
ABC journalist and resident of The Gap, Shelly Lloyd, says she hid with her children in a downstairs bathroom to escape the storm. I've never seen wind like it in my life. I've lived in Queensland all my life and trees were going sideways, it was horrifying, scary, she said.
Forecaster Vikash Prasad says most of the heavy rain missed south-east Queensland's biggest dam. It looks like the southern part of Wivenhoe catchment has just received less than 10 mm falls," he said. The storm parts were basically confined to the western suburbs and pushing through the northern parts. North Pine catchment may pick up the rainfall.

South-east Queensland has been hit by a large storm causing more widespread damage than Sunday's destructive weather. The torrential rain began at around 10:00pm (AEST) and after six hours of heavy rain has only just started to ease. Up to 250 millimetres of rain has fallen near Ipswich and Brisbane received falls of up to 150 millimetres.
There has been widespread flooding from Ipswich to Brisbane and on the Gold Coast. Senior Forecaster Geoff Doueal says some of the heaviest falls have occurred over Brisbane's three major dams. We have a seen a large area of heavy rain moving across the South-east during the evening and now its over the Brisbane area, he said.
Some places have had well over 100 millimetres of rain, so there is strong wind warnings for that, there is road weather warnings and we are continuing the warnings for flash flooding with lots of dangerous flooding out there considering the very heavy rainfall we have had. Homes have been unroofed and cars have seriously damaged at Paddington in Brisbane's inner city.
North Regional Police Inspector David Richards says the extent of last night's storm damage is becoming apparent as the sun begins to rise. It started off in the Gap area - a number of houses evacuated and the flooding went down quickly, he said. As quick as it came, it moved on through the Paddington area - a violent storm there unroofed four houses, knocked some powerlines down and there was a major number of vehicles affected by floodwater.
Queensland police say that flooding is also affecting the Brisbane suburbs of Sherwood, Darra and Oxley. More than 9,000 homes and businesses are without power. Emergency Management Queensland say scores of people have been rescued from cars that have been caught out by rapidly rising flood waters.
In Brisbane and Logan city at least five motorists were rescued after they tried to drive through flooded roads on the Inner City bypass, at the Gap and Slacks Creek to the south. Nine people were rescued in the Ipswich area alone at Woolshed Creek, Maudsland and Forrestdale. Major highways in and around Brisbane are cut.
The Bremer River and Lockyer and Laidley creeks have broken their banks and several Brisbane river tributaries are still rising.
